James Pumphrey’s Near-Fatal Nürburgring Crash
Spike's Car Radio
September 23, 2026
James Pumphrey from Speeed joins Spike and Zuckerman to talk men's style, a near-crash at the Nürburgring in a broken Audi RS4, and a terrifying brake failure at Laguna Seca. Plus: burial plots, cemetery fraud, dopamine shopping, and a 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 that might co-star with Christopher Lloyd.

Welcome to Spike's Car Radio, we're here with James Pumphrey from the hit channel, Speeed, which is a men's magazine on YouTube. What they say about their new explosively popular site, which gets millions and millions of, what do they call them? Subscribers. Every time we check in with you, you have more millions of subscribers. Is it about cars, life and technology? I think it's really just about, you know, fellows like me who are kind of clueless about all of it, going, what do I do, James Pumphrey, what do I do? I can't tell you how many times I've told the story of James Pumphrey figuring out my wardrobe.
James Pumphrey (0:43)
Yeah, just dressed like old Harrison Ford. Or like young Harrison Ford.
Paul Zuckerman (0:46)
That's really funny.
Spike Feresten (0:47)
Google pictures from the 90s. But I'm joking about it, but it was an incredibly helpful note.
James Pumphrey (0:53)
Yeah, Harrison Ford at the airport, just dressed like that guy.
Spike Feresten (0:56)
Incredibly helpful note.
Paul Zuckerman (0:57)
What an incisive, bizarrely incisive observation.
Spike Feresten (1:01)
Because look, you know, and I think men are like this, we're a little like this. You see, yeah, there he is. Well, get that little kitchen outfit.
James Pumphrey (1:09)
Harrison Ford was 40 when he became famous, so he'd already figured it out.
Spike Feresten (1:13)
Yeah, he'd already figured it out. I'm not gonna open my shirt like that. Nobody wants to see that. But you see, you know, I watch what my kids are wearing as they walk out the door. Now, one is wearing kind of streetwear. The other one's wearing is going down the baggy route with the broccoli head hair.
And I asked James, I go, do I do that?
James Pumphrey (1:31)
I wouldn't do that.
Spike Feresten (1:31)
I'm on TV, I've got a show right here, should I? And he's like, no, you should have figured it out by now.
It was tough talk.
James Pumphrey (1:40)
Yeah, people look at guys after their 30s and they're like, you should know what you're doing.
Spike Feresten (1:46)
You should know what you're doing. But it was confusing for me because you thought, well, then am I that guy that's stuck in that one year that then rides that one outfit to his grave, which is also kind of bad.
James Pumphrey (1:58)
Yeah. But it depends on the year.
SPEAKER_4 (2:02)
That's very true.
Spike Feresten (2:03)
You were talking about, but really what you're saying is there's a classic look to Harrison Ford and who's the other one, Kevin Costner.
James Pumphrey (2:11)
Yeah, Ralph Lauren look.
Paul Zuckerman (2:12)
Yeah, right around that time.
James Pumphrey (2:13)
Yeah, just dressed like Ralph Lauren, Levi's 501s.
Spike Feresten (2:16)
Yeah, you throw on a pair of jeans, you throw on a nice Oxford, you're done and no one cares what you look like.
Paul Zuckerman (2:21)
James, do you think about this because you feel like you're a visitor to this world? Is it feeling, the outsider feeling that I've always had?
Spike Feresten (2:28)
No, this is his channel.
James Pumphrey (2:29)
How what world works?
Paul Zuckerman (2:30)
The world we're in. How the world around you. Oh yeah, yeah.
Spike Feresten (2:33)
That world, yeah. But I mean, I think the larger question that he's asking and that I was thinking about too is, and we'll go through some of these videos, I always love going through the videos on your channel, but when you have, like here's one, we can even start there if you want, Interior Design for Boys, okay? Laughed when I saw the word boys, made me laugh, but really I thought about the first time I had an apartment in college and how clueless I was. In fact, you know, I looked around my house the other day and I was like, and I said to my wife, I go, you should have known me when I was living by myself. I thought I was the coolest guy. When I moved out here to LA and I had this house, you should have seen the stupidity of my decorating skills. I like that couch. Oh, that coffee table is cool. It's got Mexican tiles on it. I would have pinball machine right there.
And I thought I was fucking cool.
And Erica walked in and anybody I dated and went, what's going on here? You need help, right? So again, to Zuckerman's question, did you know, like this is a great video. I watched it. You're talking about lighting. You're talking about using wall space. You're talking about curtains and what guys do wrong. How do you research that video? Cause I'm guessing you didn't quite know much about it before you made the video.
