This episode is brought to you by Carhartt. We spent a lot of time talking about what happens on the field, but what about everything that has to happen before anyone can play on it? The grass has to be grown, the stadium has to be built, the goalposts have to be welded. That's the work of tradespeople committed to getting every detail right. And Carhartt is proud to outfit those people, the crews making football possible. So this season, when you're watching the game, take a second to think about the people behind it. This episode is brought to you by Nationwide. Everyone knows that to win in fantasy, you need players that can be so much more. The QB that can throw for 400 yards and rush for a touchdown, the defense that can snag a pick six, or the running back who can also bring in 15 receptions. It's like how Nationwide is so much more than a great insurance company. They're one of America's largest financial services companies, too.

Now, that gets the start. For your insurance and financial needs, Nationwide is on your side. Nationwide Investment Services Corporation member Finra, Columbus, Ohio.

Featured on today's episode of The Ringer Fantasy Football Show, Jalen Hurts out for the season with blood clots, Colts fired the general manager, Chris Ballard, Davante Adams ruptured his hamstring. I hate that word rupture.

Craig Horlbeck (1:20)

Painful.

Danny Heifetz (1:20)

Yeah. Must add players for week seven and beyond. And some particularly ridiculous trivia at the end. All that and more after the break.

This episode is presented by Verizon. Let me tell you all about Verizon's new simplicity plan. You get one plan, one price, just $30 a line per month, even for a single line. Welcome to The Ringer Fantasy Football Show. My name is Danny Heifetz and I'm joined by Danny Kelly and Craig Horlbeck. And we are going through all the players you need to add after week six, going to week seven of the NFL season. But first, a lot of news on this Monday, October 19th, starting with Jalen Hurts, quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, out for the season after doctors discover multiple blood clots in his lungs, which just a scary thing to read and a really weird sequence on top of the season from Hell for Philadelphia. And honestly, reading this was just, I mean, concerning.

Craig Horlbeck (2:51)

Yeah, it's pretty concerning.

I hope he's all right. It sounded like him playing in that game was kind of crazy where there was reports of how much he slept and just kind of how difficult it was for him. And he seemed to have toughed it out. And he's a super tough guy. So explain this to me. It was the calf first, right? There was a blood clot in the calf. And now it has moved to the lungs or are those separate issues that are both blood clots?

Danny Heifetz (3:17)

So let me let me just you want me to just give the timeline, as I understand it, at this moment. This is probably going to change over time. And obviously, there's a lot we don't know. And I love that everybody in the Internet's become an expert expert in pulmonary embolisms all of a sudden.

Craig Horlbeck (3:28)

Emboli.

Danny Heifetz (3:28)

Yeah, yeah.

Craig Horlbeck (3:29)

I got to say, this is like Apex Mountain for sleep being a narrative in the NFL. We've never talked more about sleep in an NFL season than this season.

Danny Heifetz (3:38)

Should we start with the sleep thing? Because Tom Pelicero reported at first, our colleague here at The Ringer, Tom Pelicero reported that Jalen Hurts didn't sleep overnight into the game, which kind of immediately became six hours.

Danny Kelly (3:47)

He was up for 36 hours before the game on the recommendation of his doctor.

Craig Horlbeck (3:50)

Correct.

Danny Heifetz (3:51)

So that kind of immediately became the thing that I feel like dominated the Internet and also is in every group chat. Tom this afternoon kind of clarified that. And Tom wrote that he spoke to Jalen Hurts agent Nicole Lin, who clarified that Jalen Hurts was up. It seems like he was up late. Again, they landed Saturday morning in London, and he was at a hospital Saturday night into Sunday morning. And Tom basically clarified that he did get the opportunity to have a room to sleep in. And I don't know if it was like literally like he didn't sleep for 36 hours, nor necessarily am I sure that like the doctors told Jalen he can't sleep. I think that it might have just been like a sleep and rest and activity or places where in theory, you know what I mean, the blood clot could form or whatever. But I think Tom's already kind of clarified that I don't, we don't know that Jalen Hurts just didn't sleep and pull it all night or to the game. You know what I mean? Yeah. So here's the timeline of what we know as of right now. This is again, October 19th. I have a feeling the story will evolve. So week four, Eagles play the Rams, Jalen Hurts calf gets stepped on in this October 4th game. And the next week, week five, is Eagles versus the Jaguars. And that game is in London. The Eagles land in London Saturday morning. They did the Rams thing and they went really late. So the Eagles land Saturday morning, October 10th. And it seems that Jalen Hurts goes to these doctors on Saturday and they see specialists in London and they diagnose Jalen Hurts with this superficial blood clot in his calf, which again, superficial meaning close to the surface, deep clots versus it was like a surface area clot.
