It's Time to Have a Conversation About Drake Maye

Fitz & Whit | Ryan Fitzpatrick & Andrew Whitworth

October 1, 2026

Three weeks into the NFL season and somehow we’re more confused than ever. Fitz & Whit try to make sense of the bizarre start to the season, but remember, September is just the trailer. We’re going to find out a lot more about these teams when the real story starts to unfold.

Speakers Andrew Whitworth, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Joe Thomas

Talk to me about Drake Maye.

Ryan Fitzpatrick (0:02)

It's hard to blame the defense. We look at what they've done. They gave up 13 to Seattle. They gave up three to Pittsburgh. Yes, they had a bad game against Jacksonville. They were also put in some bad situations. The schedule, that's what we've heard a lot about. Oh, it's tougher. It's tougher this year. It was easier. But then you get to, is it Drake Maye?

And I think I'm finally ready to admit that it is Drake Maye.

Welcome back to Fitz & Whit, A Wondry Show, presented by Miller Lite. I'm Fitz, this man right here. Yes, wearing Abercrombie again is Whit. What a bizarre season we got developing right now. Week three, so many question marks, Whit, so many.

Andrew Whitworth (0:53)

It is bizarre, but I feel like we do this every September. I feel like September Fitz is like the trailer to the movie. We see it, we're like, oh, this is going to be a funny one. Oh, this is going to be an awesome movie. And then the season unfolds and we go, all the best stuff was in the trailer.

Ryan Fitzpatrick (1:08)

Yeah, OK, so we're three weeks into the season.

I don't know what we're supposed to believe anymore. What do we actually know? And what have we been completely wrong about?

Andrew Whitworth (1:19)

I don't know if we know anything. I think that's the problem. I mean, Cincinnati, they're 2-1-0. We're thinking, oh, Pittsburgh hasn't done anything on offense. They're just going to jump in and dominate. They lose to the Steelers. Last week, we had it on Thursday night. Carolina beats Atlanta 34-3. Falcons have no shot going on the road in Lambeau. Green Bay's won 13 home openers in a row. Somebody picked them. Somebody picked them. They blow out the Packers. I mean, I don't know what we know about anything at this point. Last week, the Chargers had this unbelievable week of practice. We're about to get their best effort. They get five turnovers in the game and they still don't win.

I don't know that we know anything at this point, but I'll tell you this, after last Monday, I'm buying the Chicago Bears, Fitz. Come on, you know it.

Joe Thomas (2:00)

Special performance, dude.

Andrew Whitworth (2:01)

My guy, Case Keenum. Case Keenum, if you watched the post game with Case Keenum and didn't say, how do you not love this guy, something's wrong with you, right? It's the first time my wife looks at me and goes, do you know Case Keenum? I'm like, yeah, I know Case Keenum. She's like, do you love him? Because you have to. I'm like, yeah, you got to. I just think when you look at the Bears team, look at last year, found a lot of ways to win games and you saw some of the upside of how good they could be. And then you go into this year and you go, all right, they've already found some ways to win.

That you go, okay, this team, week one looked unbelievable. Week two, I'm going to say this, Caleb Williams has a ball in the six yard line, gets hurt. They're going in to score to take the lead in a rain game. That was an ugly game for both teams offensively. I think without that situation happening, this Bears team is three and oh, because anytime the backup goes in and you play the way they just did on Monday night, against the Philadelphia Eagles, which are a great football team, and dominate 27 to 7, to me that doesn't say, hey, we made it through a game. It says, this is how good of a football team we have. We put a veteran in there and it almost looks just as good, if not better, with him in the offense.

Ryan Fitzpatrick (3:06)

I didn't say it.

Andrew Whitworth (3:08)

That's just the truth. But there is a team that I would say.

Ryan Fitzpatrick (3:14)

Well, I want to talk about Chicago a little bit. I just want to say with an offensive line like that and a play caller like that, you saw Case Keenum all week build up Ben Johnson and say he's the best play caller. He's ever been around. Going to go down as maybe the greatest of all time. Then there's two things that happened during the game that I want to draw attention to. Number one, in 2005 when I was on the St. Louis Rams, Mike Martz had a play called Sucker Sneak.

Andrew Whitworth (3:39)

Oh yeah, the Sucker Sneak.

Ryan Fitzpatrick (3:41)

Where if you get the right look, you pull both guards and the three techniques come screaming up the field and you go right into the end zone. And by God, if Ben Johnson didn't pull it out. And then credit Mike Martz after the game, which was great. And the second thing, and for some reason this always happens on Monday night, kids are watching the game, I'm in the office grinding on tape. My name gets mentioned during the broadcast. And usually it's a bad thing. You know, it could be like, I don't remember who it was last year had thrown like four picks. Oh, the last person to throw five picks in a game. It's like, oh, don't put up the graphic, don't do it. There he is. But Case Keenum, I think that was the 7th different team that he started for and won a game, which is what I've done. Seven, so the kids get excited. We rewind it. Okay, it's a good stat. Thank goodness. I can breathe a sigh of relief, but I was with him in Houston. You saw it the other night. What a sweetheart of a human being, all about faith and family. And that's who he is on a daily basis. And so sometimes with these guys, he's the third stringer. Why are you still playing this game? He loves to be around it.
