Is There A Good Wolverine Game?
Nerd of Mouth
September 21, 2026
Jake takes the boys through a brutal tour of Wolverine's solo video game past and play through some real Weapon Excrement as they discuss games so bad you'd need a healing factor to survive them. Is it really that hard to create a good game for our lovable and murderous canucklehead?

Jake (0:16)
Listen up, bub. I'm the best there is at what I do, and what I do isn't very nice. I've lived a hundred lifetimes, seen a hundred wars.
I'm a man of the word. I'm a man of the word. I'm a man of the word. I'm a man of the word.
Mike (0:28)
I'm a man of the word.
Jake (0:28)
I need to collect rage orbs to fill my berserker meter. I need more rage orbs. Watch out, I think the blue key is in the hallway.
Mike (0:36)
The blue key is in the hallway.
Jake (0:37)
I require more rage orbs. That's right, we're covering the history of Wolverine, Mr. Logan, Mr. Jamie Hewlett, if you're nasty, but in the realm of video games.
Mike (0:50)
Already a correction.
Jake (0:51)
What? John Hewlett?
Howlett?
Mike (0:55)
James Howlett. Jamie Hewlett is the guy, the tank girl guy.
I'm sorry, sorry.
Jake (1:01)
You know what, let me do that one more time.
Mike (1:03)
No, no, let's keep it in. We're keeping it in, Bob.
Jake (1:06)
God damn it, you're gonna make me snicked over here.
Mike (1:08)
You want quality control on a Wolverine in video games episode? Very true, very true.
Jake (1:15)
This was, Holden, you mentioned this, we went into this with one intention, and now we're kind of entering, what was the metaphor you used?
Holden (1:27)
It's like when you're making the documentary you watch where they had one intention going into it and then right in the halfway point, the rug gets pulled and all of a sudden, the Dear Zachary's, the Capturing the Freedmen's of the world.
Mike (1:40)
Capturing the Freedmen's is the most famous one where they were going to make a movie about New York party entertainers, and then they found out one family of them was horrific monster pedophiles. Yeah, yeah. And they're like, well, I guess either we ignore that or that's the movie, and that was the movie. And it's a great, horrifying film, but you know.
Holden (2:03)
And I think it's a one to one to this situation.
Jake (2:06)
Yeah, it's in this metaphor.
Mike (2:07)
I just thought of the funniest thing, though, which is that when that documentarian had to call those other party entertainers.
Jake (2:14)
Oh. I'm sorry, Bonzo and Friends, we're not using the footage.
Mike (2:21)
Now, if you have any thoughts on the Freedmen.
Jake (2:26)
But we came into this looking back on the very tumultuous history of, I would say, Wolverine standalone games.
Holden (2:34)
Kind of preparing for this grand release, you know what I mean? This like, wow, there's just, kind of feels like there's-
Mike (2:43)
Well, some releases are stickier than others, as you would say.
Holden (2:47)
Exactly. But it ended up totally different, and now the reviews for the new game have hit and are pretty rough, which is weird to say though, because Mike keeps bringing up a time and time again, which I agree as well, a 7.8 or whatever on Metacritic ain't bad at all, but I think it's just because of the current climate. It was Sony, the current climate, and just games backlash-
Mike (3:13)
When we die, none of our wives are going to say we were 78% husbands.
Holden (3:17)
Yeah. If I get a 7.8 on my dadding and husbandry by the end, I will be thrilled.
Jake (3:24)
Oh, dude, that'd be incredible. Well, my wife is kind of an IGN, so you'd have to take any high review with a grain of salt.
Mike (3:31)
Yeah, but then when she gives you a 6, it really matters.
Jake (3:34)
True.
Holden (3:35)
You got to listen when she gives you a 6
Jake (3:38)
So the fact is that Wolverine as a character, is such a primally powerful power fantasy for, I would say, 12 to 15-year-olds, and the idea of playing him in a video game is just like, it makes perfect sense.
Mike (3:57)
A power fantasy for Canadians. Like, wait, I'm liked and popular?
Holden (4:01)
And weirdly enough, Australians as well, oddly enough.
Mike (4:05)
Well, you know, I wanted to just quickly, the very brief history of the character of, here's what's fascinating about Wolverine, and I just want to say before we fully get into it, when you think of the Mount Rushmore of, yes, I'm trying to give us a clippable material for our YouTube page, but when you think of the Mount Rushmore of Marvel characters, Wolverine to me has to be on there if you have the four characters, because I think what's really important about him is he is the most successful non-Stan Lee character.
