Is the KJV Crap?

Data Over Dogma

April 27, 2026

This week we're taking something beloved and ruining it! Ok, that may be a bit of an exaggeration, but we're definitely going to ruffle some feathers. The King James Version of the Bible is treasured for its poetic, often florid language.

You know, I think it's really true that a good night's sleep is really the foundation for everything. Your mood, your stamina, your brain power. It's really after a good night's sleep that I am the most prepared to tackle my day, whatever that entails. And after a long day, I need a bed that actually helps me recharge. And that's why I really enjoy my Brooklyn Bedding Plank Firm Lux. It's a California king, by the way. I feel like I need to clarify that.

And I sleep hot, so I really appreciate the Glaciotex covers that they use on their mattresses that keep me from overheating. I wake up feeling aligned, rested. I don't crawl out of bed with an achy back anymore. That is a thing of the past, and I'm ready to jump into my day. It's not just a comfortable mattress, it is intentionally built for restorative sleep, and I really appreciate that about Brooklyn Bedding.

Dan Beecher (0:56)

Yeah, that Glaciotex that you were talking about is literally copper-infused foam and temperature-regulating materials that keep you cool at night. So that's nice, but that's not the only feature we're talking about here. Because the thing is Brooklyn Bedding knows that sleep is not a one-size-fits-all situation. You've got the firm mattress. I went with a more luxurious sort of pillow top. I feel like I'm sleeping on a cloud. I got the Sedona Elite. But they offer mattresses for everybody, every sleep style, even in hard-to-find sizes, as you like to brag about your California king.

But here's the kicker. Brooklyn Bedding also offers a 120-night comfort trial. You love it or they'll help you return it or swap it hassle-free.

Dan McClellan (2:40)

This is an anti-vaxxer. This is a COVID denier who prophesied that thousands of years prior to the arrival of COVID-19, that this was all going to happen. Hey, everybody. I'm Dan McClellan.

Dan Beecher (3:01)

And I'm Dan Beecher.

Dan McClellan (3:03)

And this is Data Over Dogma, where we increase public access to the academic study of the Bible and religion, and we combat the spread of misinformation about the same. How are things today, Dan?

Dan Beecher (3:14)

Things are good. Having a good time. You and I, we just recorded the after-party for this year's, or for this week's episode, and over on Patreon, if you want to get it. And we were talking about golf and talking about snowboarding, and now I kind of want to be outside, and I want to be hanging out in the world. But no, we're going to bring you a great show. So that is what we're going to do. And today, we're going to do a, we're going to start off with a twisted scripture, and we're going to talk about, this was one of our patrons' suggestions, actually, a few weeks ago. We're going to talk about things, that pesky KJV, the King James Version, and things that are maybe unique to that, and that it might not have gotten entirely correct. We're going to talk about it, unicorns. Don't worry about it, we'll get to all of it. And then, in the second half of the show, we're going to be heading over to, we're going to go to Philo, we're going to get to Origin.

It's going to be one of history's mysteries. We're going to be talking about...

What are we talking about?

Dan McClellan (4:34)

We're going to talk about why certain authors like to use the word for God, but without the definite article. And they meant something specific by it.

Dan Beecher (4:45)

Okay.

Dan McClellan (4:46)

Yes.

Dan Beecher (4:47)

I like it. Well, let's leave it mysterious like that. And we'll start the show with twisted scripture.

The scripture that got twisted, don't get it twisted, is the KJV.

Dan McClellan (5:05)

Yeah, so the whole Bible.

Dan Beecher (5:08)
