Is OpenAI Dots Worth It?

Opening, I just dropped Dots, which is basically the AI agent, kind of like their answer to OpenClaw or Hermes agent. And today, I'm gonna show you how to set up, how it works, what you can do with it, where it falls down, and if you should actually switch to using Dots, or whether it's worth it at all. So we're gonna get straight into that. And what I actually found out today surprised me, and I'll show you why in a second. So we'll come on to that in a second, and let's get straight into it. So we're setting up Dots right now. Bear in mind, you do need to be on the pro version of Chat Cheapity. And depending on which region you're on or in, this changes in terms of access, right? So for example, I have a business account for Chat Cheapity as well. I couldn't access even on the pro plan, Dots, but I can on my personal account. So just something to bear in mind. Now, when you're setting up here, you can see that you can choose where Dot can work. So it's kind of like Grokbot, where it has its own computer in the Cloud, as you can see, or you can switch over to your local computer as well. So we can get the app like so, but you can see here that it says, Dots aren't available in the workspace yet. So again, it depends regionally where you are, but I'm just going to stick with the Cloud computer for now. And this kind of reminds me of like when Kimi Klaw came out and it gave you like a nice polished version of OpenClaw. That's kind of what this looks like and reminds me of. So it says, hey, I'm your Dot, message me or call me anytime, and it keeps things moving. I want to give me a name, and then we can customize it like so, so we can change the name here. So we'll call this Big J, and we can change the color. We can also give it a pet, too.
One thing to note is like, I don't have this inside my Codex, right? So if I go to the Codex app, it's not available here.
We can't use dots inside Codex, which is weird, but I can use it inside the browser. So if you're wondering, okay, why don't I have access to this? I would try that and just make sure you're on the pro plan as well. So you might be wondering, okay, what are dots? How does it work? So if you're familiar with Grokbar, OpenClaw, AI agents like this, Muse from Meta just dropped as well, Manus 2 came out as well. So all these new agents are coming out at the same time. And essentially, these are just like always on AI agents who work in the cloud that you can use with AI, right? So you could, for example, open up the Jack GPT app, you go to your dot, you ask it questions, it's working in the computer, and you can go from there. All right, so it's 24-7, which means that basically you can give it 24-7 tasks and it can work in the cloud and do things whilst you're away. Now it's designed to be an extension of you. Honestly, when I've had a look at this, it doesn't feel that customized to me. I just want to be 100% honest with you, because some people will be like, well, should I upgrade? Should I not? For me personally, when I'm looking at this, I'm like, I'm not that impressed so far. It seems pretty basic, but let's see how we get. So you can see here that we've got this like so. If we click on customize, we can give it a profile like this. We can also say like make your own avatar based on something you know about me. So if we plug that in like so, it should start thinking and then giving us that output back.
And you see here, it says, I'll make a fiery orange lobster inspired by your open cloth stuff. So it's going to create that now. Now you also see this option in the top right, which is start call. So we can actually speak to our AI agent and have a call with it, which is pretty cool. It doesn't seem to want to answer. Why is he not answering the phone? I just tried to call you. Why are you not answering? So, so far, it literally cannot answer a phone call, which is not ideal. Just something to bear in mind there. Good stuff. Now, also, you can see, for example, here, we said to make an avatar for yourself, and it started working on it. It has been about 20 or 30 minutes, and it's not created it at all, right? It's not created anything. So this is not ideal. If we reply to this, I'm just going to say, what are you up to on this? The reason that I say this is because if you were using, for example, Sonnet 5.5 or something like that, it would be way, way faster. I would expect an animation to be done in probably about, I would say, five to six minutes.
