Welcome to The Dave Chang Show. I'm here with Chris Ying, producer David. We're going to talk a little bit about college. It's back to school season. We're going to do a moif, my opinion is back. And then we have some guests that are brave enough to sit at this counter and we're going to hear our thoughts. But back to school is around the corner. Hated it as a kid. I only liked it when I got into college.

**Chris Ying** (2:31)
Because you get to leave again.

**Dave Chang** (2:32)
Yeah. And I knew it was going to be fun.

**Chris Ying** (2:35)
But when you were a kid and they started doing like back to school commercials in like July, it's the worst thing in the world.

**Dave Chang** (2:42)
College was great. I had the best time. But I know that my kids who are going to go and do second and pre-K again this year, they're not going to want to go back to school. And I felt the same way. I think what we need to discuss is we have kids of the same age. And I've been thinking, would our kids go to college? Will they go to college? We think about this all the time. I mean, I went to a very expensive private liberal arts school. There's no way I would want them to go there.

Yeah, I mean, we talk about this all the time. I don't know if I'm going to... I was encouraged from day one.
College is like the be-all, end-all. My entire life's purpose, I was like an insect with one purpose. And the only purpose was to go to college. And then my parents were like, great, you're done.

**Dave Chang** (3:32)
I mean, Asian-Americans' household, college or... You're disowned.

**SPEAKER_4** (3:39)
Yeah, college or you're out.

**Dave Chang** (3:42)
And I grew up, so it's hard for me, and I'm sure you feel the same way, to know what it was like for other American families. But I feel like I don't want to overgeneralize here, but America as a whole decides to put a premium on college.

**SPEAKER_4** (3:57)
Yes.

**Chris Ying** (3:57)
I mean, especially over the past 50, 60 years, it has become just like the cleanest form of the American dream is my kids got into college.

**Dave Chang** (4:06)
Everyone's got to go to college. Yeah.

**Chris Ying** (4:07)
I'm the first one in my family, that kind of thing.

**Dave Chang** (4:09)
But I came across this crazy stat that in the like the 60s, guess how many adults went to college? Because when you turn 18, you're officially an adult.

**Chris Ying** (4:19)
Like 40%?

**Dave Chang** (4:20)
Seven, a little over 7.5%.

**Chris Ying** (4:23)
Of people, of all adults graduated college.

**Dave Chang** (4:26)
Yeah.

**Chris Ying** (4:27)
That's crazy.

**Dave Chang** (4:28)
And today it's north of 35%, which I actually thought was going to be, both I thought were low. I feel like it's 70% go to college.
