The running back room has taken some interesting terms. Who are the ones standing out right now?
Welcome on in and all aboard the Auburn Express TV powered by The War Rapport. Ike Jones in here, C-Dub in here. Turn us up, turn us on. We'll definitely turn it out. We are talking Auburn Football, Auburn Fall Camp and Auburn Running Back Room. Ceaser. Omar Mabson has seemed to emerge as RB2, and it doesn't seem to be particularly close right now in terms of like who's getting the most hype coming out of Fall Camp. What are your thoughts on young Omar Mabson, the true sophomore now, early enrollee, all the things, young running back there in that room. What are your thoughts about how he has emerged in that room? I've been impressed, Ike.
Obviously, with him being so young, there's a lot he's had to overcome from just adjusting to college, but also to, Ike, being able to get on the field, it was through a lot of injuries last year, and that was a pretty depleted running back room by the end of last season. The concern with someone so young as an Omar Mabson, as talented as he is and as high as his ceiling is, you're dealing with a new coaching staff who's going to bring in players, many of whom have had more playing experience, which is the case with Nykahi Davenport, a Bryson Washington, and a Tae Meadows.
So the concern is, will a kid like him get buried on this depth chart? Now again, he's a young guy, so is it a situation where he's going to have to either wait his turn, or will he have a chance to actually compete? Well, during spring, we actually saw him get consistent reps with the twos. As time went on, you realize that, hey, Bryson Washington, a running back who was believed to be RB2, at least RB2 when he had signed from Auburn out of the transfer report of coming from Baylor, the belief was that it was going to be an uphill battle for Omar Mabson to really get significant time. That wasn't the case during spring. And you just wondered, as happy as you are for an Omar Mabson, you wonder, is this one of those things where, and we've seen this in past years, where you would have what I would call spring warriors, right? Where a person just like, they're all the talk during the spring camp. They're all the talk during A day. They have a great A day and then they never see the light of day again. Come fall. And you wondered, was Omar Mabson an example of that, especially if Bryson Washington gets into playing shape and factors into this race. To get to fall camp and it's consistent that Omar Mabson is still running with the twos, tells me that Auburn, this coaching staff, it tells me that they feel confident that Auburn has at least two running backs in Jeremiah Cobb and Omar Mabson that they can rotate in and out and that they can rely on going into SEC play. To me, I think that is huge kudos for Omar Mabson. That's huge kudos for, I think, Auburn got a win here because you have someone again very young who has a lot of playing time ahead of him who can truly be good for your offense. Yeah, I think one of the big things that I love that I'm hearing about Omar Mabson is a thing that a lot of fans feel like maybe is disappearing from collegiate sports is that football means something to him, but Auburn means something to him, right? He's a guy that is a local product. He grew up in the area and he was just happy to get an opportunity, right? He came in as a preferred walk-on. He wasn't even a scholarship guy. Of course, the preferred walk-on program doesn't exist anymore, so he is on scholarship now, but he earned his way not just from a, hey, happy to be here, War Eagle, I love this town guy to a, no, this guy is a legit running back and he deserves his opportunities. He's continued to show in the way in which he approaches things. Coaching staff feels as if his quiet form of leadership is something that they're absolutely going to need going into this season, and he has a physicality as a runner that's very different from what you get from a Jeremiah Cobb.
