Introducing Skiff Davis
The Nextlander Podcast
October 8, 2026
Somehow the excellent Star Wars games keep coming with Galactic Racer hitting this week, plus the World of Warcraft Forever beta, the prospect of a fifth Uncharted, the even wilder prospect of a new Ape Escape, the final word on the EverQuest-playing family, and a bunch more.
Speakers Vinny Caravella, Alex Navarro, Brad Shoemaker

Hello, everybody, and welcome back to another Nextlander Podcast headlong into October. The video game truck is backing up, dumping out the video games in October.
Alex Navarro (0:23)
Beep, beep, beep. The Star Wars fell out.
Beep, beep, beep. Here comes Control, and here comes World of Warcraft. Was that just caked onto the bottom of this truck? World of Warcraft? That's an old game.
Vinny Caravella (0:36)
It's been here forever. There's a bunch of stuff. I haven't gotten into Silent Hill yet. This is not necessarily October stuff. There's Gears of War that is out there now. E-Day, I've heard. E-Day. Brad Shoemaker. Hi.
You are on, I'll just say asterisks here, asterisks.
You are on location. So if anything, I'm going to do a general disclaimer, so we don't have to fret about it. If anything happens with the audio, you are under not ideal circumstances for recording.
Brad Shoemaker (1:05)
I am not only on location, but upon arriving at said location, this microphone immediately seemed to start giving up the ghost.
Vinny Caravella (1:12)
Right, yes.
Brad Shoemaker (1:13)
So, dot, dot, dot, but hopefully it'll hold up until I've got designs on a new microphone.
Vinny Caravella (1:19)
So we were also under immense pressure because we had a very nice email last time lauding us for our audio, how nice our audio sounds, so we don't want to disappoint.
Alex Navarro (1:30)
So we're here to remind the audience of how it could sound.
Vinny Caravella (1:34)
If anything happens, you should know, Brad is operating on 10 plus year old hardware right now.
Brad Shoemaker (1:41)
2014, I believe, is when I bought this.
Vinny Caravella (1:43)
And it seems to be a little flaky, unexpectedly flaky.
Brad Shoemaker (1:47)
The mic that I think I want is about an hour away.
Vinny Caravella (1:50)
Okay, great.
Brad Shoemaker (1:51)
So if I can get down there soon, I could maybe go get that microphone and everything will be fine.
Vinny Caravella (1:56)
Listen to that. Well, first game that I think we should get to because I'm kind of weirdly surprised. Brad, I think you were more aligned with where this game is being received and pretty excited for it. It's Star Wars Galactic Racer. Now, when we talked about this on the planorama, I was just making a joke about it being Poodoo because it's one of the three things I remember from Episode 1 along with Boonta Eve and, I don't know, Sebulba. Sebulba.
But turns out, people like this. This is maybe not the Poodoo so proclaimed. Quite the opposite. Jokingly by Vinny Caravella.
Brad Shoemaker (2:36)
Skiff's game seems like it might own.
Alex Navarro (2:38)
Yeah, I think it's good.
Brad Shoemaker (2:40)
I haven't gotten super far into it yet, but it seems pretty damn good.
Vinny Caravella (2:45)
It is. So, Star Wars Galactic Racer, first of all, if you are like me and maybe didn't pay too much close attention to it, I'll give you what I think before we jump into actually the nuts and bolts and pods and thrusts of this.
Alex Navarro (3:02)
Vinny's Take.
Vinny Caravella (3:03)
Vinny's Take. First of all, what it is not, it is not a pod racing game Out of the Gate. It is a speeder bike.
Alex Navarro (3:12)
It's a future racer, but in the pod racing visual milieu.
Brad Shoemaker (3:17)
I assume there will be pods at some point.
Vinny Caravella (3:19)
I have raced a pod in this game. OK. You can go OK. Just out of the gate here. It is very funny because this takes place after the fall of the empire.
The pod racing scene has basically disbanded. It is deemed very dangerous. It's the thing only the most cuckoo bananas pilots, Subulba, would ever engage in.
Brad Shoemaker (3:40)
No human can do it.
Vinny Caravella (3:41)
No human could do it. Any.
Brad Shoemaker (3:44)
You can see things before they happen.
Vinny Caravella (3:48)
Do we want to talk the entire first movie? Are you an angel?
So the pod racing scene is like, whoa, dude, come on, man. So somebody has restarted the galactic racing scene, which is basically, again, speeders, I guess Luke Skywalker has a speeder, does that classify as a speeder? Speeder bikes, aka the things they fly around on Endor or the moon of Endor, sorry. And then what is the other thing? Is it like a skiff or something, like a skimmer?
Alex Navarro (4:17)
Is it a blade? Is it like some kind of blade thing?
Vinny Caravella (4:19)
Some very lightweight thing. So what you end up having are speeders, which are your balanced craft, it seems like, motorcycles or the bikes, which are high acceleration, but not great cornering. And then these kind of very lightweight, high agility machines, like the, what's the doctor from F-Zero, the golden...
