Daisy Edgar-Jones, first time on the show. I've been looking forward to speaking with you ever since I saw your beautiful work in Normal People a couple of years ago. Congratulations on everything since then. You sure know how to pick them.
Daisy Edgar-Jones (2:46)
Thank you. So nice to chat to you. Thanks.
Matt (2:48)
I do want to first start off by asking, we haven't seen you on our screens in a few years. I think it's been two years now actually.
And your filmography, while very impactful in the short amount of time that you've been in this profession, you're not someone I notice who takes on like four or five roles a year. And I'm just really curious about what it is you look for in a project or a character. What does it have to speak and say to you when you're making that choice?
Daisy Edgar-Jones (3:17)
Yeah. I mean, I think that I become very clear immediately when I read a script if I feel like it connects with me and it's something I want to. I put a lot of myself into working and it's quite all encompassing. And I find it really hard to find any balance when I'm approaching a project. And so it's really important to me that it's something I really want to, I know that when I'm working it's going to be my everything. And so it's really important to me that everything I choose feels like a challenge and also that there's something within the story that I'm interested in exploring. And I think it's been interesting throughout my 20s, post-normal people, really having some semblance of choice, which is a real gift.
And in my early career, I was thrilled to work in any capacity. And now I'm a little more, I suppose, lucky that I get to have a little more choice. But I think I've always really wanted to really have a range in terms of the type of work I do, whether it be genre or character or world or look or filmmakers. So yeah, it's been really fun kind of working out. Every time I do something, I'm like, right, what's next? Something completely different.
Matt (4:37)
So was it Georgia Oakley's involvement? Was it just Sense And Sensibility? Yes, I'm in or what was it like for this one?
Daisy Edgar-Jones (4:47)
Honestly, both. I mean, for me, because Sense And Sensibility is a novel I grew up loving. It's also, I've seen every adaptation of it and there are so many beautiful, brilliant adaptations of it. But for me, it really was, what is the filmmaker wanting to say about this story that maybe hasn't been explored? So Georgia Oakley, I was such a fan of hers. I'd seen Blue Gene. I'd been to the Biffers the year that she won. I was just such a huge fan of that story and she just so excited me as a new fresh voice on the scene. When I heard she was the one that was taking on and tackling this material, I was so intrigued to know what she really wanted to find within the story. I think her mood board and her vision that she really wanted to centralize the love story as the two women, and I think that's really true, and also find a version of the Dashwoods that feels a little raw and undone.
