Intel's stock closed today at just over $92. While TSMC is at $403, that gap tells a story about the foundry market that's been quietly hardening over the past 18 months.

It's striking. Intel's foundry ambition was supposed to be its big comeback story. But the market is clearly not buying it yet.

Right. When Intel announced its IDM 2 strategy in 2021, the idea was to open its factories to external customers and challenge TSMC directly.
Fast forward to mid-2026, and we still haven't seen a marquee customer commit to Intel's advanced nodes like 18a.

I know they've talked about some smaller wins, but nothing from the big names, no NVIDIA, no AMD, no Apple. Those are the ones that move the needle.

Exactly.
Without those customers, Intel's foundry revenue remains negligible. Meanwhile, TSMC keeps winning the biggest designs. NVIDIA's latest AI chips are on TSMC's N3e process, and AMD uses TSMC for its high-end CPUs and GPUs.

So, what's holding Intel back? Is it technology, price, or just trust?

All three, honestly.
Intel's 18a node is supposed to be competitive with TSMC's N2, but it's been delayed. And even if it works on paper, customers need to see volume production before they bet their products on it. That trust factor is huge in this industry.

Plus, the cost of switching foundries is enormous. Design teams have to optimize their chips for a specific process.
Once they're locked into TSMC, it's not easy to just pivot.
**Lucas** (1:52)
That's the switching cost. And TSMC has been consistently on time for almost every node since 28 nanometers. Intel's track record has been more mixed. When you're a company like Qualcomm, trading on TickerQ COM, you can't afford to bet your flagship chip on a foundry that might slip.

Speaking of Qualcomm, they were rumored a few years ago to be evaluating Intel's 20A node, but they never committed. Now, they're deep into TSMC's roadmap.
**Lucas** (2:22)
Right. And that's the kind of outcome Intel needs to reverse.
The company did get a big boost from the Chips Act, billions in subsidies and loans. But money alone doesn't guarantee customers. You need to prove you can deliver.
**Luna** (2:37)

Yeah, seriously, it makes a real difference. Anyway, back to Intel, the subsidies help them build new fabs in Ohio and Arizona, but those fabs aren't even producing yet.
Ramping a leading edge fab takes years.

And meanwhile, TSMC is building new fabs in Arizona, Japan and Germany, all backed by their own governments. So Intel doesn't have a monopoly on subsidies anymore.

That's a key point. TSMC's Arizona fab is slated to start producing N4 chips later this year.
And they're already talking about a second fab for N3. Intel needs to show they can actually win customers, not just build factories.
**Luna** (3:35)
What about the equipment side? ESML at $17.57.
That's a very expensive stock. Is Intel's delay in ordering HINA-UV machines part of the problem?
**Lucas** (3:47)
It is.
Intel was the first to commit to HINA-UV, but then they scaled back their orders.
TSMC has been more cautious about adopting it, but they're also investing heavily. The fact is, both companies need those machines for sub 3NM nodes. Intel's hesitation signals uncertainty about their roadmap.
**Luna** (4:10)
So, how does this play out for investors? The SOXX is at 527 today, which is down from its peak, but still up year over year. But Intel is dragging on the index.
**Lucas** (4:22)
Intel is one of the cheaper stocks in the SOXX, but it's cheap for a reason.
If the foundry strategy doesn't turn around, Intel could become a niche player in a growth industry. That said, they still have a strong PC and server CPU business, but even that's under pressure from AMD.
**Luna** (4:42)
I want to zoom out a bit. The foundry race isn't just about Intel versus TSMC.
There's also Samsung, which is also struggling to find customers for its advanced nodes. And then there's the whole Chinese push for self-sufficiency, but that's a different story.
**Lucas** (4:58)
True. Samsung's foundry business has also lost major customers like Nvidia to TSMC. So Intel isn't the only one behind. But the market caps tell the story.
TSMC is worth about 800 billion. Intel is around 120 billion. That's a massive gap.
**Luna** (5:19)
Is there any scenario where Intel closes that gap? Or are we looking at a permanent shift in the pecking order?
