Major Update The Knicks rookies are currently playing in Summer League, but we already have an update on what their future holds contract-wise. According to NBA Insider with The New York Post's Steph Bondy, he recently reported that the Knicks have already made a decision on the type of deals Knicks rookies Tyler Nickle and Jack Kayil will receive. Take a look at these following updates.
According to Steph Bondy, despite his promise, Tyler Nickle is unlikely to command a standard contract for the reigning defending NBA champions. He's a candidate for a two-way deal, though, and that should all be sorted out during training camp in late September into October. Nickle's 18-point game against the Nets drew the attention of Josh Hart, who tweeted during the action, number 55 got a chop in reference to the forward shooting stroke. As Kevin McCullough Jr. and especially Muhammad Diawara demonstrated last season, there always could be unexpected opportunities for young players.
Regarding rookie Jack Kayil, Steph Bondi had the following to say, Kayil said the following after New York lost to the Spurs. According to him, It's not my decision regarding whether he stays or he goes after the Summer League. So I'm just trying to show myself in the best way. And it is what it is. I'm super happy I also got drafted. And we'll see what happens in the next days, weeks, whatever.
According to Bondi, if he joins the NBA with the Knicks next season, Kayil is a candidate for a two-way contract, and perhaps development in the G League. He showed playmaking potential Saturday, but overall, the Knicks offense was atrocious, similar to Friday's loss to the Nets.
The best thing about both of these rookies is that they want to be here. They want to be part of the Knicks organization, especially Tyler Nickel. He said the following last night to the media, regarding how it felt like after being drafted by the Knicks.
According to Nickel, I heard my name called at the draft, and seeing it being the Knicks, I was super excited. Obviously, a championship organization. I thought it was perfect, a perfect situation, to see what winning is all about. The standard that they hold everybody to in the program. I feel like it's perfect for me to be on.
And Knicks Summer League coach, TJ Saint, had very good things to say about both rookies. Take a look. According to Saint, he said the following about Tyler Nickel and his commitment to defense during mini-camp last week. According to Saint, Tyler Nickel has been shooting all right. His defense has actually been impressive in camp. When we were in the airport the other day, I went over to talk to him, and he was already studying our playbook. So I already like where he's at, getting ahead of the game.
Regarding Jack Kayil, this is what TJ Saint had to say.
I really liked him. Started watching him on film after the draft. Thought he could get into the paint. Thought he had a quick burst. Between the two rookies, Tyler Nickel for me is the more NBA ready prospect. And the main reason is because of his three point shot. That will instantly translate to the NBA level. With regarding Jack Kayil, it's still not a guarantee that he goes overseas and plays. If he has a very good summer league the rest of the way through, he could earn a two-way contract for New York and stay with the Knicks next season. He may not see NBA level action next season, even if he stays with the Knicks. But he'll be part of the Westchester Knicks, he'll play over there, and he'll be able to develop even more. And I think for New York, that's actually better for him and the Knicks if they end up doing that. But if after summer league, they do not believe in this kid, they think he needs even more development before he can play at the NBA level, or even at the G League level, then he will be stashed overseas. Either way, though, he is not going to hit the Knicks cap space. And with Tyler Nickel, it's clear. He will be getting a two-way deal. He will not be touching the Knicks cap space. And the main reason for that is because New York needs to go out there and find another center to add to this team. No matter how much promise Tyler Nickel is showing, and by the way, he's showing a lot of promise, he's been the major bright spot out of these last few Summer League games. And these games have been awful if you're watching from a fan perspective. Because the Knicks Summer League team, they're not really playing well. But the rookies, especially Tyler Nickel, he has been playing well. He's been showcasing his defense and that three-point shot. And every time he steps on the floor, at least for me, it looks like he adds something else to his game. Another layer to his game. Exactly what you want to see. Each and every game, a player getting better, adding more to his game, and seeing what he can do when he puts it all together. Tyler Nickel is that player. And I have no issue if New York gives him a two-way contract. Next season for Westchester, he should be one of the better three-point shooters on that team. And if he ever gets any moments or opportunities to play at the NBA level for the Knicks, I know he's going to shine in those opportunities too.
