Miles McBride trade coming? Will they, won't they? That's been the question surrounding Miles McBride and the Knicks. Will New York extend and keep Deuce McBride, or will they trade him? Well, according to new reports, it's unlikely that Deuce gets extended.

Shout out to NBA insider Ian Bagley for answering the following question on his mailbag. What's your read on McBride's future with the Knicks? Is he likely a trade piece for a big? Love him, but it feels hard to see him extended. And Bagley had the following response.

This one is tricky because Miles McBride has definitely earned a raise. He's outplayed his contract, three years, 13 million, by a significant amount. The problem here is that the Knicks are up against the NBA's second apron. According to owner James Dolan, the Knicks will not exceed the second apron and team's salary, 221 million, this season. Let's assume Carl Anthony Towns, Josh Hart, and eventually, Jalen Brunson sign extensions. With those extensions on the books, the Knicks will have significant money committed to the starting five.

Landry Shamett and Jose Alvarado are also under contract for multiple seasons, so there isn't much financial wiggle room for a McBride extension.

It's worth noting though, that New York has been in regular communication with Miles McBride's representation. According to Bagley, things can change of course. Maybe the Knicks move off a future salary in a trade and open up some money. Maybe Dolan and the Knicks decide to increase future spending without regard for the second apron. It's worth noting that the Knicks and McBride's representatives have been in regular contact ahead of the season. In a perfect world, those conversations would produce a multi-year extension for McBride. However, we're not in a perfect world. Even though New York has kept regular communication with Deuce McBride's representation, it doesn't mean they're talking about an extension. If anything, they could be talking about a trade and possible trade destinations. According to Bagley once again, the longest tenured Knick, Deuce McBride loves New York, loves his teammates, he was an integral part of this team's rise. The fact that he'll likely have to play this coming season with contract uncertainty is a shame. Yes, McBride on an expiring contract is one of the most valuable tradeships in the league. He would garner significant interest if New York made him available via trade, either in season or in the offseason. We're certainly not there yet, but logic tells you where things could be headed.

Miles McBride being traded seems inevitable at this point. New York clearly cannot pay him given all the contracts they have on the team already and all the extensions they're about to give up. There's just no money left to pay McBride, and New York does not want to see him walk for nothing, just like Mitchell Robinson did this past offseason. That's not going to happen either. So the only way to help the Knicks at this point is to trade McBride for a player that they need, likely a center, and then try to replace McBride with a free agent signing, another wing that they can add to this team. That's likely what the Knicks are going to do because they cannot keep McBride. The only question is, when will that trade happen? Like Ian Bagley said, they could trade McBride right now, or they can do it during the season. But either way, that's exactly where things look like they're headed. Only because of where the Knicks are in terms of the second apron, their salary cap, and the players they need to pay at this point. Cat needs an extension, and even he's going to take less. Same thing with Josh Hart. They already paid Jose Alvarado, they paid Landry Shamett. There's not enough money to go around if New York wants to stay out of the second apron. The only way they keep McBride, extending him and keeping him and not trading him, is if James Dolan Greene's like the Knicks, going into the second apron. And I doubt that's going to happen. Look at the players that we already lost. If New York was going to go into the second apron, they would have done so already to retain Huck Porty and Mitchell Robinson.
