Brunson Pursuing Max Contract Jalen Brunson is the king of New York. He helped the Knicks win a championship after 53 years. He's already a legend in New York. He sacrificed over $100 million to make the Knicks a championship-level team. Now, he's ready to get paid. And you know what? He deserves it. Jalen Brunson sacrificed over $100 million to build a champion in the New York Knicks. And now, the bill is coming due.
ESPN insider Vince Goodwill made it clear on the latest episode of The Hoop Collective. Brunson isn't just getting paid next summer. He's potentially getting paid in full. For Knick fans still buzzing off a title, it's a reminder that loyalty has a price tag. According to ESPN senior NBA writer Vincent Goodwill, Brunson is expected to pursue a maximum extension, potentially worth around $300 million, after previously accepting a team-friendly deal with New York. According to ESPN, Jalen Brunson is going to get all of his money, every bit of it. I won't say he sacrificed, but he signed a year early, right? He signed a year early, he could have signed for $100 million more by waiting. Every dollar of that $280 million, or $300 million he's supposed to get next summer, he's going to get all of it. So when exactly is he going to get that extension? And is it only going to be for $280 or $300 million?
Actually, it could go as high as $400 million.
According to theheavy.com, Brunson will be extension eligible next summer, where he'd play the 2027-2028 season for $40.5 million as per his current contract. But have the first year of his $280 to $300 million extension kick in in 2028-2029?
If Brunson waits till the end of 2028-2029 season and enters free agency before signing his extension, he could be eligible for a contract up to $400 million after 10 years of service. But honestly, at this point, he can ask for whatever he wants, and New York would give it to him. He sacrificed for this team. That means no matter what his next contract with the Knicks is, he deserves every single penny of it. Brunson can ask for whatever he wants, and the Knicks organization will have to give it to him. Given his status as a New York legend, who brought a title to the city after 53 years, Brunson's pay cut allowed core teammates like OG Ananobe, Mikael Bridges and likely Josh Hart to get a lucrative contract extension with the franchise.
This has been the best Knicks team I have ever seen in my entire lifetime as a Knick fan. And Jalen Brunson, he's a huge part of why.
I know he's gonna get paid soon, and I don't care what the number is, and neither should you, neither should the Knicks. They know they need to retain this man. They know they need to re-sign him. Like I already said, he's a legend in the NBA already. A legend for New York. And when you have that status, you need to pay up. You need to pay this man. We all already know, he will retire a New York Knick. And once he does, his jersey will hang in the rafters. No other player for the Knicks will ever wear number 11
Exactly how it should be. Jalen Brunson proved to everyone, proved to all of his doubters, that if you think the impossible of him or the Knicks, it doesn't matter what you think. It all matters about your heart, your belief in yourself, and your work ethic. And Brunson, he has all of that in spades. He always believed in himself and never ever listened to the critics. And because of that, he helped the Knicks win a championship. Jalen Brunson is probably one of the greatest Knick players I have ever seen in my life. And when it's all said and done, he'll likely be the best Knick player in franchise history. I know I'm saying a lot, and I may be asking a lot of Brunson, but you know what? I believe it. I believe he can be that player. I believe he can do it. I believe he can win multiple championships with this team. And I think James Dolan believes that, and so does Leon Rose. That's why when it's time to pay up and give this man the money that he deserves, he will get every single penny of it. And I love that. I love when players that deserve to get paid, actually get paid. And Brunson, he's at the top of that list.
