And now, let's get started.
Major free agency update. The Knicks have two veteran minimum contracts that they can give to any free agent willing to take it. But the free agency market, it got even bigger when the Kings waved this player. Shams just dropped a major update. Let's take a look.
Shout out to NBA insider Shams Sharania for giving us this major update. According to him, the Sacramento Kings are waving Demar Derozan, making the six-time All-Star forward one of the top free agents available. The sides work collaboratively on this resolution after exploring trade routes. And according to CBS Sports' Sam Quinn, the Golden State Warriors, the New York Knicks, and the Miami Heat are among the organizations that should consider pursuing Derozan this summer. Now I know what you're thinking. The Knicks should pounce on this, right? They should add Demar to the team on a vet minimum contract. But unfortunately, according to NBA Insider Steph Bondi, he believes that New York will go into a different direction. He believes they'll sign Jordan Clarkson and not Demar Derozan. Take a look at this update. Shout out to Steph Bondi with the New York Post for giving us this following information. According to him, Fireside Knicks asked the following, Demar Derozan will be waived by the Kings, which would make him a free agent, should the Knicks add him to the team. And according to Bondi, he said the following, Don't know about Derozan, but I'm optimistic about Jordan Clarkson re-signing with The Knicks.
However, there are ways around this. As I just mentioned, New York has two open roster spots that they can use to sign Clarkson and Demar Derozan. However, reports around the league do confirm that New York is looking to add another big in free agency. But they can address that center situation in a different way. They can make a trade, featuring Pacome Dottier and some second-round picks, to trade for a center and add them to this team. And if they do that, they save money, they add the players that they need, and they make this Knicks roster even more competitive for next season. But the main question is, will Demar Derozan accept the vet minimum contract? And even if he does, will he accept the bench roll on this Knicks team? Well, according to one NBA insider, he doesn't think so. Let's break down those reports too.
Shout out to CBS Sports Insider Sam Quinn for giving us this following information. When he was discussing the best landing spots for Demar Derozan, the New York Knicks came up. And this is what he had to say.
What sort of role is Derozan demanding at this point? The Knicks are looking for a spare bench ball handler, someone to fill Jordan Clarkson's role from last season.
Derozan is overqualified. Maybe the Knicks could open up more minutes by trading Deuce McBride in a deal for a center. That's probably on the table anyway with McBride entering a contract year. But that deal probably has to wait for the season. And either way, shots are minimal in New York. Derozan is incompatible with Jalen Brunson. Because of his shooting, he might be incompatible with Josh Hart as well. But Derozan is represented by CAA, which means the Knicks know him well. He also played briefly for Mike Brown in Sacramento. So the Knicks have all of the information they'll need here. If they think he'd fit into a smaller role, it's not a crazy talent play. Clarkson wasn't a staple in the playoff rotation. But he did his job when the Knicks needed him to.
