The Knicks have new options for the center position. The Knicks have attempted to sign multiple players in free agency. But for one reason or another, they have been unable to do that. With Yonis Valanchunas, he wanted to take more money and play overseas. With Musa Sisi, the Dallas Mavericks wanted to sabotage the Knicks. Now, New York has the following options remaining in free agency.
Shoutout to theheavy.com for giving us this following information. According to them, the Miami Heat, the New York Knicks, and the Los Angeles Lakers are among the teams to show free agent interest in Nick Richards. One of the best remaining centers on the open market, Richards would sign to a contender for the vet minimum. Despite playing in fewer games last season, Richards' numbers are in the same tier as Mitchell Robinson, who averaged 5.7 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. He played 60 games and started 16 of them.
Robinson is better on the glass than Richards, but the free agent center is the much better free throw shooter at 64.4% compared to Robinson's 40.8%.
Since we are in the latter stages of free agency, the Knicks should be able to get Richards on a minimum deal.
Nevertheless, landing a big man now would ensure the Knicks don't have to part with trade assets. Richards isn't the only center on the free agent market. He is, however, arguably the best talent at his position who is currently without a team. Nick Richards has been on the Knicks list for the last few weeks. He's still a free agent and nobody has signed him yet. If the Knicks cannot get the player that they want, they'll likely be forced to sign Nick Richards. But honestly, that's not the only option on the table right now.
New York has other avenues to explore if they want to add another center to this team. Take a look at this option. Shoutout to Sports Illustrated for giving us this following information. According to them, if the Knicks want to take an upside swing like they were trying to do with Musa Sisi, then look no further than Moses Brown. New York's front office is familiar with the 26-year-old Brown, who played for the Westchester Knicks during the 2024-2025 campaign. The 7'2, 258-pound Brown, averaged 18.3 points and 16.8 rebounds per game across 26 regular season games in Westchester. It was his second stint with the G. Lee Club, the first coming in 2022-2023.
Oh, but I'm not done yet. There's another option on the table too.
Shoutout to Sports Illustrated once again for giving us this following information. According to them, Alex Len, who was with the Knicks in training camp last year and saw action in two preseason games while on an Exhibit 9 contract, recently parted ways with EuroLeague powerhouse Real Madrid after one season overseas. That means Alex Len is currently available to come back to the NBA, and since he was with the Knicks last year in training camp, he could repeat that again and join New York once again this year.
Nick Richards, Moses Brown, Alex Len, these are the options on the table that New York can sign to fill that 14th roster spot. Out of all those options, if the decision was up to me, I would be signing Moses Brown right now. This man is a walking double double. And I understand it was only at the G League level, but if he went to the NBA level, he could still do the same thing. Maybe it wouldn't be 20 and 16, maybe it would be 10 and 10 Some nights 10 and 8 That depends how long he plays during the game and how many minutes he's given. But honestly, that kid is ready. He's motivated and he wants to leave an impact. That's why, in my opinion, New York should sign him and get this third-string center situation over with. However, given Moses Brown's issues with pace, speed and his overall lateral movement, I don't see the Knicks signing him. But not really for any of those reasons. The main reason New York wouldn't sign him is because of his lack of NBA experience. Right now, in free agency, we've seen New York lean in one direction primarily. Signing a center with experience. Either a little bit of experience, or in most cases, a lot of experience. Looking at veteran centers, like Jonas Val and Chunis. But since Moses Brown doesn't have that, it's likely New York won't sign him. That really leaves Nick Richards and Alex Len on the table. And in that scenario, I see the Knicks signing Nick Richards to fill that 14th roster spot. It's not my favorite edition. It's not the move that I would make. But given what the Knicks are looking for, and all the available options on the table, it only seems right that Nick Richards would be the choice. He brings NBA experience. He's still young. He shoots great free throws. He has a good offensive game. He may not be that great of a defender, or even shot blocker or rebounder, but either way, given the options on the table, it's real slim pickings right now for New York. They don't really have that many other options. That's why Nick Richards is likely the direction they're going to go in after they exhausted all other possibilities.
