Over the years, we've produced some fantastic episodes here on the Rask Network. Thousands of podcasts. And sometimes there's some gold that's buried deep in this vault of content. What you're about to hear is one of those episodes. It's already been published on this channel, but we thought it was so good that when we reached back into the vault to see what was there, this episode came up. I hope you enjoy this very special rewind episode here on the Rask Network.

Hey there, here's a quick note. This podcast contains general financial information only. That means it's not specific to you, your needs, goals or financial objectives. So don't act on the information until you've spoken to your financial planner. You'll find our full disclosure, disclaimer and link to our financial services guide in the show notes. John, thanks for coming into the studio.

John Addis (1:35)

Thank you, Owen. It's nice to be here.

Owen Raszkiewicz (1:38)

Road in, no less.

John Addis (1:40)

Road in on my bike from Port Melbourne. It was a massive four kilometres, I think. In a horrible headwind, though.

Owen Raszkiewicz (1:46)

You must be buggered.

We've only spoken once before. I'm hoping this conversation takes us in all types of unusual places, but really interesting given your background. You know, I find the Australian finance circle, someone always knows someone. I don't know if you found that.

John Addis (2:06)

Yeah, it's pretty small.

Owen Raszkiewicz (2:07)

But a lot of people say really good things about you. I'm not just saying that because you're sitting right in front of me.

John Addis (2:13)

Who are they?

Owen Raszkiewicz (2:15)

They shall not be named. But they say such great things about you.

And whether it's on the investing side or more commonly on the writing side.

John Addis (2:24)

Okay.

Owen Raszkiewicz (2:25)

So we're going to spend a lot of time hopefully talking about that and talking about the business that you built, businesses actually. We're going to talk about investing, we're going to talk about our edge as personal investors and what that means and so much more. So I've been excited to do this for a very, very long time. So thank you for making the time to come in.

Last time we spoke, it was on a live show on a Wednesday night. You had a turtleneck on, if I remember correctly.

John Addis (2:55)

I did. I was just doing that in honor of Steve Jobs and had a gin and tonic as well, which is kind of disappointing not to have one here right now at three o'clock in the afternoon or whatever it is.

Owen Raszkiewicz (3:07)

Yeah, I mean, it's gin and tonic time somewhere, right?

John Addis (3:09)

It is.

Owen Raszkiewicz (3:11)

So I was going to ask you, I mean, I would assume that you don't always have a gin and tonic in your hand when you're talking about investing, but more importantly, is there anything that you practice in your daily ritual? Maybe it's a yearly ritual, maybe it's something that you do over your life or you reflect on regularly. Just something that you do maybe that is almost like religion to you. It's almost like something that you do that maybe few others do and you think to yourself, this gets me in the rhythm, this keeps me structured, it keeps me grounded, whatever it might be. Is there anything?

John Addis (3:45)

Yeah, there's a few things. There's a little bit of hippie in me, Owen, I must admit.

Owen Raszkiewicz (3:51)

Okay.

John Addis (3:52)

I don't really like to admit that, but it's true. I lived in Byron Shire for about 15 years. It's impossible not to have some of it. Most of it, I kind of reject. But the idea of being outside, often on my bike, is something that I do four or five times a week.
