I Will Have Mercy, Not Dogma
Data Over Dogma
April 13, 2026
This week we're taking two topics that we've skimmed the surface of, and we're diving deep! First, we're going to figure out what the heck a Maccabee is. That is, we're covering both history and a couple of books in the apocrypha. That's right: we're discussing the Maccabean revolt.

You know, I think it's really true that a good night's sleep is really the foundation for everything. Your mood, your stamina, your brain power. It's really after a good night's sleep that I am the most prepared to tackle my day, whatever that entails. And after a long day, I need a bed that actually helps me recharge. And that's why I really enjoy my Brooklyn Bedding Plank Firm Lux. It's a California king, by the way. I feel like I need to clarify that. And I sleep hot, so I really appreciate the Glaciotex Covers that they use on their mattresses that keep me from overheating. I wake up feeling aligned, rested. I don't crawl out of bed with an achy back anymore. That is a thing of the past, and I'm ready to jump into my day. It's not just a comfortable mattress. It is intentionally built for restorative sleep, and I really appreciate that about Brooklyn Bedding.
Dan Beecher (0:56)
Yeah, that Glaciotex that you were talking about is literally copper-infused foam and temperature-regulating materials that keep you cool at night. So that's nice, but that's not the only feature we're talking about here, because the thing is Brooklyn Bedding knows that sleep is not a one-size-fits-all situation. You've got the firm mattress. I went with a more luxurious sort of pillow top. I feel like I'm sleeping on a cloud. I got the Sedona Elite. But they offer mattresses for everybody, every sleep style, even in hard-to-find sizes, as you like to brag about your California king. But here's the kicker. Brooklyn Bedding also offers a 120-night comfort trial. You love it, or they'll help you return it or swap it hassle-free.

So you're saying with Hilton Honors, I can use points for a free night's stay anywhere?
SPEAKER_4 (2:14)
Anywhere.
SPEAKER_3 (2:15)
What about fancy places like the Canopy in Paris? Yeah, Hilton Honors, baby. Or relaxing sanctuaries like the Conrad in Touloume?
SPEAKER_5 (2:22)
Hilton Honors, baby.
SPEAKER_3 (2:25)
What about the five-star Waldorf Astoria in the Maldives? Are you gonna do this for all 9,000 properties?
SPEAKER_4 (2:31)
When you want points that can take you anywhere, anytime, it matters where you stay. Hilton, for the stay. Book your spring break now.
Dan McClellan (2:41)
I have been called out by a member of my own Patreon community. And when this individual pointed me to this, I was like, ah, okay, you got me. Hey, everybody, I'm Dan McClellan.
Dan Beecher (3:02)
And I'm Dan Beecher.
Dan McClellan (3:03)
And this is Data Over Dogma, where we increase public access to the academic study of the Bible and religion, and we combat the spread of misinformation about the same. How are things today, Dan?
Dan Beecher (3:15)
Things are good. It's a rainy day today here in Salt Lake City, and that is...
Dan McClellan (3:18)
It was snowing a minute ago.
Dan Beecher (3:20)
Oh, that's... Look, all of that is good stuff. We need...
Dan McClellan (3:24)
It is still snowing down here a little bit.
Dan Beecher (3:26)
There you go.
We need the moisture, so I'm happy. There's a sort of an LDS...
Dan McClellan (3:34)
That's a very Mormon turn of phrase there.
Dan Beecher (3:37)
Yeah, it's almost a... It's a meme at this point in Mormonism, and we pray for moisture.
Dan McClellan (3:43)
Yes. Precipitation is always moisture.
Dan Beecher (3:47)
That's what happens when a culture slash religion comes of age in a desert, I suppose.
Dan McClellan (3:54)
Yes.
Dan Beecher (3:55)
They get their own language around.
Dan McClellan (3:57)
We've got a Mormon-coded way to refer to precipitation.
Dan Beecher (4:01)
That's right. That's right. Anywho, things are good. So today's show is going to be interesting. We've got a Histories Mysteries. Both of the topics of today's show, I brought to you as things that we have mentioned several times sort of on the journey of this podcast, and I realized that I kind of knew what they were, but we had never really worked through them and talked about them as their own segments. So I wanted to actually know what they were. So the Histories Mysteries, we're going to be talking about the Maccabeean Revolt. Because if there's one thing to be said about Maccabees, they're revolting.
And then we're going to do a What's That, and we're going to talk about the Prophetic Critique. And that sounds very fancy, but it's actually really cool and interesting. And also, you're going to bring some objections up that I haven't heard.
