Update on Josh Hart's contract extension. Josh Hart becomes extension eligible on August 10th, which is a few days away. However, it's likely that Josh Hart will have to wait on that extension until Karl-Anthony Towns and the Knicks decide on his extension.
Shout out to dailyknicks.com for giving us this following information. According to them, the Knicks' entire starting five is between 29 and 31 years old and signed at least through next season. Two starters in Karl-Anthony Towns and Josh Hart have options for the following year, but Hart's leverage belongs to New York. That makes Karl-Anthony Towns the only potential flight risk.
As a result, Josh Hart is likely going to be waiting for his extension for however long it takes Towns and the Knicks' front office to settle their own negotiations. CBS Sports' Sam Quinn agreed on the third apron podcast that the Villanova product's next deal will depend on the number that Cat signs for. But when Josh Hart does sign his extension with the Knicks, it's extremely likely he will take less with New York. The safest bet for the Knicks is to keep around the five members of their NBA championship winning starting lineup. Sam Quinn added that he could see Josh Hart taking a pay cut, in part because he's the Knicks' oldest starter, and presents as the least important of the starting five. But, he also argued that it could be, in part, because of Josh Hart's post-career earning potential in New York City.
The Karl-Anthony Towns extension will determine how much money Josh Hart gets paid. It will also determine how long the Knicks can keep this starting five together. If Karl-Anthony Towns takes a pay cut, then it's likely the Knicks starting five will stay together for multiple seasons. That means the Knicks will have a chance to win multiple championships for multiple seasons. And going back to Josh Hart, we know he's expected to take less in his upcoming contract extension with the Knicks. However, that shouldn't come as a surprise to anybody watching this video. Because beforehand, when Josh Hart needed to sacrifice for this team, he absolutely did that. He is getting older, he knows that, but he also knows that New York City has been the one team that treated him like family, that made the Knicks feel like his home team. That's because as soon as he dropped down in the Knicks, as soon as he was traded here, the crowd, the fans, they absolutely loved him, they accepted him, and all of his flaws, including the Knicks' team itself, they accepted Josh Hart, they made him a starter. Everywhere else in his career, yeah, maybe he did play some starter minutes, but he was not considered a starter, he was considered a very good bench player. Fast forward to today, he's part of the Knicks starting five. That same starting five that won an NBA championship. He's a legend in New York City already. If he were to retire today, he would be treated as a legend all around New York City. And like Sam Quinn said, Josh Hart's earning potential is extremely high in New York City. That's because of his personality, his charisma, and all the opportunities he's likely going to get once he retires with the New York Knicks. And I believe that's what's going to happen. Like Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart will forever be a New York Knick. He will retire a Knicks player. And that's because he will do whatever it takes to stay a part of this team, sacrifice for this team, and make sure New York has a player they can count on to do everything on and off the court. And Josh Hart, he already checks all of those boxes. In my opinion, Josh Hart could extend with the Knicks for a lot of money. However, he's not going to do that because he wants this Knicks team to stay competitive. Josh Hart, he wants to make money, but he also wants to win multiple championships. That's why he's going to sacrifice. And in my opinion, that's the same reason Karl-Anthony Towns will sacrifice. Now I can already see you guys in the comments. Why should the players be sacrificing? Why can't the owner James Dolan sacrifice? He made so much money during the Knicks NBA Finals run. Why can't he pay these players whatever?
