After the Rams win, and it is a great week. Joining us right now, the head coach of the Los Angeles Rams, Coach Sean McVay. Coach, how are you, man?
John Ireland (0:40)
I'm good.
Sean McVay (0:40)
How are you guys doing?
John Ireland (0:41)
We're doing great, John. And I'm gonna start with a compliment for you. I've been friends with Kurt Sandoval for 40 years.
And we started in TV together.
Sean McVay (0:52)
Oh, yeah, that's cool, isn't it?
John Ireland (0:54)
And what you did, making him an honorary captain for the Crucial Catch, which is an NFL mandated program to help intercept cancer.
I thought, Sean, you said exactly the right thing for people that didn't hear it. You talked about how we all get to work in the toy store of life. You get to coach the Rams. Mason and I get to talk sports for a living. But the real fighters are the people that fight cancer. It affects almost everyone in our lives. And Sean, the fact that you and the Rams are recognizing Kurt and you were the one to deliver it, meant everything to him. And I wanted to thank you for doing that.
Sean McVay (1:26)
Oh, that's cool. I tell you what, artists, Twyman and I, we've gotten a really cool relationship with Kurt over the years. We've done a coaches show. And you see his heart and what a rare human he is. And then you watch just the grace and resilience at which he's handled it. And we couldn't ask for a better captain to represent us. And he's a stud. So I appreciate you saying that.
He is a good man, isn't he?
John Ireland (1:50)
Great.
Sean McVay (1:50)
The best.
John Ireland (1:51)
And by the way, you said something else, Sean, that I think people should take to heart.
Cancer doesn't discriminate. Hurt is the most in shape guy I know. I mean, runs marathons, works. He's like you, coach. He's got a six pack. I mean, you would run into him at the gym all the time if you guys work together. But cancer doesn't care. And the fact that you got to lock in and fight and you got a team behind you. And that's why it was so cool. It was great. Anyway, thank you for letting me be at it. No doubt.
Sean McVay (2:18)
No, that's cool.
John Ireland (2:19)
Yeah.
Steve Mason (2:20)
So, coach, I want to...
Sean McVay (2:21)
Absolutely. I love it. I'm glad you said that.
Steve Mason (2:23)
Yeah. Yeah.
Let's talk. And we love Kurt. Let's talk about what happened in Philadelphia, if it's okay with you. I bet it is. Yeah. I was watching the game and was really, you know, really worried there for a while. And then I saw you pull everybody in your offense together for like a meeting on the sidelines, which I don't see you do. I don't know, how often do you do it? And what did you say?
Sean McVay (2:51)
I don't do it often, you know, because usually, you know, I just, you know, here's the thing I would say, I don't know exactly what I said. I just will operate with what's on my heart in the moment. And what I said was something along the lines of, guys, I have such belief in you guys. If we just execute the way that we're capable of, we can flip this thing. Our defense was playing outstanding.
We were making some uncharacteristic errors that were preventing us from being able to go get points on the board. And I said, if we just figure out how to do what we're capable of, and if you just believe, and they did it, they deserve all the credit, they brought it to life. But I think sometimes it's your job to be able to recognize moments where you can just try to reach guys or really just inspire them to be able to say like, hey, we're a lot closer than we think, but we've got to really start to lock in. I wish I could say that the very first drive we got, it was one thing split, it took a series after that, but they did an amazing job finishing the game. And like I said to you guys afterwards, the defense did an amazing job of keeping us in it. And then the offense and the kicking game responded and we found a way as a team.
