I know all the focus is on the Yankees, but the New York Giants, if you missed it, lost Braxton Berrios for the year. Yesterday, as he acknowledged, I don't think the team did first, I think he did, but regardless of that, that I guess he broke his foot. So he's having surgery for him.
Odell Beckham is not being brought back. A lot of people thought, oh, that opens up a spot now for Odell to be re-signed. He signed with the Vikings practice squad, but word on the street is that Matt Nagy, not a fan of Odell Beckham Jr's.
Chris McMonigle (0:29)
I mean, I'm not surprised to hear that. Something was up there. It felt like a weird time to move on from him. It just felt like he was never on the field. Something was up.
When they brought him on, I expected him to get used a little bit. Something was up.
Craig Carton (0:43)
I think he had one target total. I remember 11 snaps, something like that.
Chris McMonigle (0:47)
That doesn't surprise me. Then he came out and publicly-
Craig Carton (0:49)
He was pissed.
Chris McMonigle (0:50)
He was pissed. So you figure he wasn't even, he didn't even think no matter who got hurt, he could ever come back with the Giants. It felt like he recognized that the Giants don't want him for whatever reason. Maybe it's Nagy or maybe him and Nagy didn't get along.
Craig Carton (1:02)
The Giants did get some positive news, not for this year. I guess it's positive for them, not the root for it. You know, the All-World Right Tackle for the Eagles, who as we announced yesterday, retired from the NFL, Lane Johnson, most likely a first bout Hall of Famer right tackle, has some mental health issues, has a mother and father who are gravely ill as well, and just couldn't play any more football. And the reason that is a good thing beyond obviously just this year for the Eagles, I was reading, for the Giants, pardon me, I was reading a story down in Philadelphia Inquirer about Lane Johnson leaving and what it does to the Eagles with the salary cap. The Eagles are apparently a year away from being in a quote unquote cap hell to the tune of Jalen Hurts two years from now, is a $97 million cap. So what does that mean? That means they're going to have to redo his deal to keep kicking that can down the road to the point of him being like 36, 37 years old and way out of his prime. But at some point the bill comes due.
So for Giant fans and Cowboy fans and Washington fans, the Philadelphia Eagles, the story in Philly right now, is that Lane Johnson doing what he did was done not just because he has personal issues, but because it's his way of kind of shivving Howie Roseman, who he had an issue with from I guess last year's trip to London or something like that. But beyond that, it puts all of his money now, gets accelerated, the bonus money, against the cap. So the story now in Philly is that the best GM in football has planned an exit strategy. He's gonna leave the Eagles in cap hell and go take a job where the team desperate, like the Jets, that kind of team, for a proven GM. So from a giant fan perspective, while the Eagles are probably still the team to be, although they have not looked great and their offensive line is now a shell of what it once was, they traded Cam Juergens to the Ravens today. So Juergens is gone, Lane Johnson is retired, and Jalen Hurts does not look good this year.
You're about a year away from the Eagles being in a lot of trouble. Yeah.
Chris McMonigle (3:18)
I mean, eventually you knew they were going to have to pay the bill eventually. They kept signing everybody and pushing them off.
Craig Carton (3:22)
And I would tell you this, as a Jet fan, I like Jack Mungi a lot. I would sign Howie Roseman tomorrow.
Chris McMonigle (3:27)
Oh my God, yes.
Craig Carton (3:28)
Right?
Chris McMonigle (3:29)
I mean, he's the best executive in the sport.
Craig Carton (3:31)
Been to three Super Bowls, one, two, is that right?
Chris McMonigle (3:33)
Yeah.
Over the last 15 years. I don't know how you could say anyone's done a better job than him.
Craig Carton (3:38)
And they traded Cam Jergens. They got a seventh round pick. I'm sorry, Cam Jergens and a seventh round pick. For a fifth and a next year's too. For a fifth and a 2028 second round pick. Yes. So fifth next year, 2028 second round pick. Yeah. There you go. All right?
