Welcome to The Niche Is You. My name is Matt Gottesman, at Matt Gottesman on Instagram, and this is my daily podcast where I create short, quick-hitting episodes to help you uncomplicate life, creativity, and the pursuit of your highest self. There's only main character energy here. Now, let's get into it. Let.
Welcome to episode 217, How to Make Yourself a Big Target for Luck. This, I love this topic, I really do. Before I get into it, please check out the show notes. There's lots of things going on in there. I know sometimes I also tell you at the end of the hour, but I thought it would be great to remind, especially the new folks here, show notes have a lot of really great links. There's free workshops on clarity and setting goals. There's the right design build, master class. There's the recommended reading list. I actually got a couple of new books that I'm going to be reading some excerpts from coming up, so stay tuned. Some really good stuff in there. And there's also the community calls that happen every Monday. So let's just jump right into it. How to make yourself a big target for luck. Now, I have a lot of different ideas on this that I want to share with you guys. And this came from reading a couple of different newsletters that were talking about creating your own luck, how to do that.
Because if you're going to sit around and wait for it, good luck. But this was inspired from several different avenues, several different people's thoughts. And so some of them I want to share. One of them comes from Naval Ravikant, who talks about the four levels of luck, right? The first is obviously there's just pure luck, right? Just pure luck. The second is you work really hard and you get lucky.
And he's not necessarily meaning one of my favorite quotes, which is, the harder I work, the luckier I get. Where that quote comes from, forget the initial author of it, but the concept is when you are doing your work and you're putting it out there and you're increasing the chances of your surface area for luck, which is exactly what Naval talks about. And the fourth point I'm gonna bring up, because he says the third is, other people might be lucky and you happen to see their luck and you get involved in their luck. But the fourth is a quote I'm gonna read, which says, I think of it like luck surface area. So you can do some things to increase the odds that luck finds you.
So just building in public, by the way, building in public, for any of you that are listening, is basically a movement, which has become a big movement, which is a lot of also what I'm starting to do more and more of in general as well. Building in public is this idea of, hey, listen, there's some concepts I wanna build. I'm gonna do it in front of you all, and I'm gonna share what I'm learning along the way.
And in doing so, you will hopefully also be able to take some of that wisdom, some of those ideas, some of those concepts, some of those systems, whatever it might be, and do it for yourself, as well as also support me or anybody else doing building in public, because you're able to see the transparency of what goes into the whole thing, right? I love the concept of building in public. It says, so just building in public, talking about what you're doing, talking about stuff you're interested in. All of a sudden, you feel this tailwind of people connecting you with other people who are interested in the same things that you're interested in, or sending you articles, or sending you customers. That can go a long way. It'll feel like luck, but really you did something to create that. The most extreme form is to become so unique and so well known as being unique that you're the only person who can unlock certain opportunities. And then, as Naval says, luck becomes your destiny, which I think is really interesting.
So, I love this. Obviously, you guys know I would have loved this. Again, he says, so just building in public, talking about what you're doing, talking about stuff you're interested in, all of a sudden you feel this tailwind of people connecting with you and connecting you with other people. You're interested in the same things that you're interested in, sending you articles or sending you customers.

When you talk about these things publicly, again, not like whatever is private in your life can stay private. It's more about, hey, I'm learning this particular industry or I'm learning this particular discipline. I'd like to share along the way what I'm learning. Oh, you know who you should go talk to? So-and-so is actually doing that as well too. Let me put you two in touch. Oh, that'd be great. Yeah, I would love to. You know who you remind me of? You remind me of so-and-so. Let me put you two in touch.
