Today's guest is going to show you how to turn your intellectual property into 18 revenue streams. Good to see you.

Junaid Ahmed (1:22)

Good to see you too.

Kary Oberbrunner (1:23)

Great to be here.

Junaid Ahmed (1:25)

Now, you're not only, so I forgot to do this. Today's guest is Dr. Kerry Oberbrunner. He's a Wall Street Journal best selling author, creator of Instant IP, and the guy who's helped thousands of entrepreneurs turn their ideas into IP powered companies. His TEDx talk on intellectual property production has over a million views. His work has been featured in Forbes, Entrepreneur, and Fox News, and today he's here to help you understand how to stop trading time for money and start building a business that scales. So let's dive in.

Great to be here. Dr. Kerry, I am absolutely excited to have this conversation with you. Before we jump in, we were laughing about something backstage. You told me you've cycled through the French Alps more times than most people have been in France.

What is it about those mountains that recharges you?

Kary Oberbrunner (2:24)

I'll tell you what, a couple of things. One is I have to be off my phone because if you're not, you'll crash and die off a mountain.

The other one is that the first time I went to France, I thought I'm going to listen to audiobooks and I got all these podcasts I'll listen to. I didn't listen to one thing because you are literally in the most beautiful place. I mean, it is painful, you know, you got to train, but I train well and it's so enjoyable. So like the creativity and the ideas just flow.

Junaid Ahmed (2:59)

I love that because that's also like a metaphor here for how you think about building businesses. Yes.

Kary Oberbrunner (3:07)

Yes, it's true. Like there's a word called abracadabra. Most people have heard of it. And most people don't know what it means, but it means I create as I speak.

And so I think from a very young age, we've been taught that there's something powerful about that. Like I can, I can speak something and it can actually happen. You know, young kids believe that like rain stop, you know, or, you know, let's create, let's create a lemonade stand. They don't have any self-limiting beliefs yet when they're really young. In fact, I don't know if you know this, but part of it is because they have a very low form of self-awareness. This is why babies don't blush.

Junaid Ahmed (3:50)

Think about that.

Kary Oberbrunner (3:51)

Babies don't blush because they don't have a concept of self-awareness yet. But the older we get, the more self-awareness we start to have, and it's judgment and it's critique and it's what will people think. And that's why our mutual friend Heather Parity introduced us because she helps us get out of our head and start creating. But I'll tell you what, Junaid, I thought abracadabra means I create as I speak. What if I could develop a technology that means I protect as I imagine?

And that's what Instant IP is. Because if you know about IP, intellectual property, we can get into that, but it's very time, it costs a lot of time, it costs a lot of money. And so I thought we need something that's frictionless. We need like the uber of intellectual property protection.

Junaid Ahmed (4:41)

Yeah, I absolutely love that. And IP is something that's growing over the past few decades, right? People are spending more time with IP than anything else.
