You know, one question that Harold had that I didn't answer, why go to Bednor there? It was curious, but when Boone made his postgame comments, I understood it just a bit.
I think the inning got out of hand, which is certainly against everything that he wanted to have happened. He didn't want Bednor to throw 30 pitches. The Yankee bullpen right now is absolutely exhausted. They've got to refrain from bringing in Blackburn. They've got to refrain from bringing in Hedrick. They've got to get these guys some rest and reset them. There's no Fernando Cruz anymore. Boomer now has assumed a really big role. Stryber is going to report today, so he'll be part of the bullpen as well. Bednor had pitched once in 10 games.
And they got him in. There was nobody else to go to, and this way they could get him work. Now, it kind of backfired on them because he struggled and he had to throw so many pitches. So it does make you wonder, can he pitch tonight? My guess is that he can, but it's right on the precipice. And they were that one batter, that final batter away from bringing in a position player. If not for the rule that you have to be eight, eight runs down, right? Then they would have done it to start the inning, but they weren't eight runs down. Became eight runs down when Bednor gave up the three runs. I think when he came in, it was seven to one.
So it's complicated. I think it's the toughest thing for a manager to do, is to keep a closer locked in, and you have to do that by getting enough rest, but then not getting too much rest. And the fact that he pitched once in nine or ten days probably precipitated getting him in there. And also, Yankees didn't have anybody else. They could not push Heal anymore. He had built up to 40 pitches. I think he threw 39 in his two innings yesterday, and he would have thrown a lot less if Caballero didn't boot an easy double play ball. So these things happened, and they used Fulmer, and they just didn't want to keep going to the same guys and wearing them down in the game that they were trailing and didn't look like they were up for that game yesterday.
Maybe Boone said, this is one that we're probably not going to win, but I'm going to bring in my closer. We'll keep it at 7-1. We'll take a chance in the ninth inning. But Bednar didn't have it. He pled no contest in Wisconsin to the charge of OWI, operating a vehicle under the influence, I guess. And he sent out this long statement. And essentially, he's saying that he has a problem with pain. So I'm not going to read the whole thing, but he said that he faced a personal failure by pleading no contest to a civil offense for OWI in Wisconsin. I own this completely. Multiple back surgeries ended my career earlier, than I expected, and left me with constant debilitating pain. That pain led to a dependence on pain medication, and my efforts to get off those medications led to an over alliance on alcohol. As I have taught my three young sons, when you fall short, you stand up and take full responsibility. This is an important first step. The harder and more important step is examining the path that brought you here, making the changes necessary to move forward. The path requires honesty. None of this is an excuse. These are my failures. I take responsibility from. This past month has been difficult, but it has also been personally significant. It has required me to confront and own my mistakes fully, to the Lord, to myself, to my family and out of the public. I'm working closely with a team of doctors to address my health and make the necessary changes. I'm deeply grateful for the support of my family, my friends and the NFL community, including players, coaches and owners. Your encouragement has meant more to me than you know.
