They start a series at the Dodgers tonight at Citi Field, and they've got some heavy lifting they have to do. They just lost two out of three in Milwaukee. It's hard for them to go off on a run. I mean, nobody is delusional enough to think they're going to make a run anymore. You know, there's 17 games under 500 The reason they can't make a run is they don't have pitching. They don't have enough pitching to go off on a run. You need starting pitching to go off on a run, as the Red Sox proved. Red Sox don't have a great offensive team by any stretch of the imagination, but they run a good starter out there every single time. And when you throw a good starter out there, you got a chance to hold the other team down and maybe squeak out a win. So you look at what the Mets are going to run up against the Dodgers. They have McLean tomorrow. Great. McLean can beat anybody. But you have Manaya tonight. And you have Peralta on Sunday. You can't win that way. You can't win knowing that your starter is going to give you about five innings and probably not going to hold the team to under four runs. So they're not going to go off on a run. The Mets have a decision now. Who do they trade? And by trading that person, are they making themselves better for the future? Because I keep reading, well, the Mets intend to contend in 2027 Well, they don't have a shortstop in their system. So the folly of even thinking about trading Francisco Landoer, that I don't understand. Now, if you want to contend, you could still trade Weaver. You could trade Luke Weaver. Because the one thing I think that David Stern does a decent job at is putting together a bullpen. And it's a very volatile part of a baseball team. A guy could be great one year, terrible the next. And Weaver could bring back something because he still has a year left in his contract to 11 million dollars.
But when you talk about like trading people for the Mets, who are they getting for these players? Who are you crawling over? Are people crawling over themselves to get Freddie Peralta, who's a five inning pitcher, who hasn't had a good year? Now, you can say he hasn't had a good year because the Mets defense isn't that great. He just hasn't had a good year. You might get something for Clay Holmes. He looked okay in a rehab assignment. So he'll have one more rehab assignment where he could show Scouts that he's back to what he was with an under two ERA before he got hurt on a comeback or against the Yankees. That's somebody that might bring something back. What, is he going to bring a lot? I don't know. He has an opt out in his contract. So he's going to be a free agent at the end of the year.
Peralta, is he going to bring back a lot? I don't think they're going to get back the same as what they gave up to Milwaukee for Peralta. Alvarez might get you something back, but is it going to be a lot? And what team is trading for Beau Bichette, who hasn't opt out at the end of this year?
Nobody wants Marcus Simeon. It seems like only David Stearns did. So you're not going to trade Marcus Simeon. And the young guys, you don't want to trade Ewing. You don't want to trade Benj.
You don't want to trade those guys. Soto is not going anywhere, and I still don't believe that Lindor is going anywhere.
