We got everything going, baseball playoffs in full swing. All this NFL news. Shefty's got a ton of it that we'll get to in just a moment. But as I opened the show by saying, we want to buy stock in champagne this morning because it was being spilled indiscriminately all over the country last night. Let's start in the Bronx where the Yankees are trying to keep their season alive against the Rays in game three. Yanks down two-zip, of course, in the series. Top of six, tied at two. And here's your moment. Two outs and it's Victor Mesa with a two-run shot, the smash to right field. And he knows it immediately.

There's his own dugout and says, guys, we're moving on. That's his first career playoff home run. Rays lead at four-two. And then came the moment. They'll be talking about forever. Bottom six, same score. One on Anthony Volpe with two men out. It might be. It could be. It sort of is.

The ball winds up in the bleachers. The fans are celebrating, but take another look.

A fan reaches over shades of Jeffrey Mayer, grabs the ball.

The ball would not have gotten out. The umpires eventually get together and rule it a double on fan interference. One run scores. Volpe goes to second, so the tying run is on base in scoring position for Spencer Jones, and he can't get it done.

That's how the Yankees seventh inning comes to an end. So they're still down 4-3. Bottom eight, same score. With a runner on, John Carlos Stanton, pinch hitting.

He struck out in both his played appearances in this series. Yankees still down one. They got the tying run in scoring position again in the night, but Brian Baker was just too good. Three appearances, three saves, no hits for Baker in the series. Rays win it 4-3. They're on to the ALCS. Yankees lose it. They're on to the off season.

All right. And here's Robert Stanberry, only the third. We call him Buster. And Buster, you and I were talking before we came on the air this morning. There's only one moment that everybody remembers if you're old enough to remember it when we see this happen with the Jeffrey Mayer play. You were covering that game for the Baltimore Sun, and I was anchoring ESPN news when this moment took place. One of the legendary moments in Yankee Stadium history. And of course, the umpires got it wrong that day. Did they get it right last night?

SPEAKER_5 (3:27)

Greeny, they absolutely nailed it. You're right. 1996 after the game, Richie Garcia saw the replay and said, yeah, I blew that call. Last night after the game, Kevin Cass, the Rays manager, Aaron Boone, the Yankees manager, both said, Victor Mesa Jr., the player involved in it, all said that the umpires got this right.

Not only ruling that the fan had interfered with the ball, but also that George Lombard Jr. was gonna score given that the ball was in play and Mesa Jr. was not gonna catch the ball. They nailed it.

SPEAKER_4 (3:56)

So it's not a moment that will be remembered forever for all of the obvious reasons. So let's talk about the fallout. The Yankees get swept out in the first round after the game. Aaron Judge, who wasn't able to participate in almost any of the season or any of the postseason, sent a pretty loud and clear message of what he's hoping to see in the future. Let's hear it.

SPEAKER_6 (4:17)

Yankees, I feel like they should go all in and do what they need to do and find if we got holes, if it's finding certain players or personnel, whatever we need, you gotta go out there and get it. That's why I signed back here to play with the Yankees is to fight for a championship every single year and to go all in. As a team, there's a lot of things but I got to control what I can as a player and what I can do for my teammates. So if it's making moves, stuff like that, so we got the front office for it.
