Welcome back to the show, everybody, The Michael Kay Show, fastest two hours on sports talk radio. We are on the Espn New York app right now and the Espn New York YouTube channel. And the reason is that the Mets are playing, and they're on 880, and the Mets are leading the Reds 7-1, middle of the fifth inning in Cincinnati as the Mets try to squeeze one win out of three. They lost the first two games, 12-0, 5-3, and they are leading 7-1 as Nick Lodolo of the Reds did not have it. The Reds come into Yankee Stadium on Friday for a three-game set, and then the Yankees hit the road again with games in Detroit, three games in Detroit, and four at Fenway against the Red Sox. This story really hit me because it's a cautionary tale, and I've been hearing a lot of athletes talk about things as well. It's amazing that we don't teach more about nuts and bolts finances in high school in this country. So I've been reading stories lately where NBA athletes with podcasts are talking about, you know, I got my signing bonus, even NFL athletes, I got my signing bonus, and it was $40 million, and I couldn't believe that, you know, when I saw the bank deposit, it was $20 million. I mean, the government took 50 percent. Well, yeah, that's the way it works. The old adage is you don't start making money for yourself until the end of June. Yeah, 50 percent of your paycheck goes to Uncle Sam. And these athletes never knew that, ever. They never, ever knew it. And they all thought it was a good idea. Even Charles Barkley has spoken about this. You know, Julius Irving straightened them out. Buying five cars, five really, really expensive cars. And one of the things that I was once told by a car dealer, the worst investment you can ever make is a car. Because if you buy a car for $70,000, right, and the car leaves the showroom and goes onto the streets, the value has dramatically dropped and it's not going up.
Because there's no, there's no ascending value in purchasing a car. And Charles Barkley had five of them. And Julius Irving goes, how many cars do you drive? He goes, one, he goes, what do you need the other four for? And Alan Iverson was telling a story where he was buying these $350,000 cars and he drive by and his mother goes, I want one too and he'd get her one. I mean, athletes for some reason think that the money's gonna go on forever. You have a finite career. It's gonna end and then all the big money earnings will end as well. Anyway, long wooden way to start to talk about Floyd Mayweather. His nickname is Money, as in I don't know how to handle it. The guy made over a billion dollars boxing. But, the money he spent and the gambling that he did, remember all the times that he would show you the tickets for, you know, a thing he gambled on for a million dollars and he won? Imagine the tickets that he had that he lost, but he's only showing you once that he won. Well, he's passing bad checks now for $200,000. That's what he's being charged with. He has a $7.2 million bank lien and another $22,000 bank lien from a Vegas gated community. Guy has no money left.
Floyd Moneyway with Mayweather is broke. Think about it. A boxer really has, really, really, really has a finite career. Then after that, you're not making money other than signing autographs every now and then. Mike Tyson went broke. Then he had a second career because of the hangover, and his Broadway show, so he's lucked out. Most boxers don't.
He used to flash all this money, Floyd Mayweather, and now it's gone. He's never going to get it back. You know what's going to happen? He's going to have the box and he's going to get punched drunk because he's going to be too old, and he's not going to be the same Floyd Mayweather, just because he needs money to pay bills. Where did it all go? Over a billion dollars in purses, where did it go?
