Welcome back to the show everybody. Michael Kay with you until 3 o'clock at that time. Don Hahn and Rosenberg take over. You are watching The Michael Kay Show on the ESPN New York YouTube channel, presented by good friends at the Parisman Firm. Of course, you are listening on 880 ESPN, the ESPN New York app as well. We will do a quick reset on the Jets, losing a tough game 20 to 17 in overtime.
You worry about Aaron Glenn. Last year was a disaster for Aaron Glenn. Disaster. He hired the wrong coaches. He didn't coach well. The fact that he hired those coaches, that's a reflection on him. They got rid of him. Now, he's calling to defensive plays. Defense did well yesterday. Brings in Frank Wright, has an adult in the room, has a real quarterback in Geno Smith. Much better than the quarterback that he and Moudji picked last year again. That's on him. But the one question mark that you could have on Glenn yesterday, the Packers are fourth and five at the 45, right? There's one on one left.
The Jets have a timeout. If they call the timeout there, the Packers are not going forward on fourth and five. So it's going to force them to punt. So if they're punting from the 45, where do the Jets get it? The 15? Maybe it gets punted out of the end zone. And it's a touchback, which makes it even better. So the Jets would get the ball back, with about 50 seconds left. 50, 52, 53, something like that.
You got a chance. And, you know, Glenn, in explaining it, and he still doubles down on it today, says, you know, I didn't want to, they had two timeouts remaining, and I didn't want to give them the ball. But you're coaching on the negative then. So you don't have any faith in your team moving the ball, what, 40 yards to get into field goal position?
I think that's a missed opportunity there. So if you're worried about their two timeouts, all you have to do is run the ball the first time. See if they call a timeout. Then you know the lay of the land. And then you can run out the clock, right?
Or you could actually be aggressive, work the sideline. You don't even have to work the sidelines with 52 seconds left. You can throw balls over the middle of the field.
You want to get yourself in the position to kick a game-winning field goal, and he elected not to do that. I think that's a mistake. And the other mistake is in overtime, they win the toss, and instead of deferring, he wants to take the ball first. So you're setting the template. Let the other team get the ball first. Let's see what they do. If they kick a field goal, then you know you've got two options that you could have. You don't have two options right away if you get the ball first. If it's fourth and five, you know from the 30, you're going to kick a field goal.
But if the team kicks a field goal, then it's fourth and five. Well, you might go for it if you want to win the game or you kick the field goal to tie it. You know what you have to do if you let the team get the ball first. Now the numbers are not drastically in favor one way or the other, so it's hard to rip them on that. It's just me using common sense. Well, this is what I would do. But I definitely would have had, I would have called the timeout at the end of regulation with 101 remaining. I want the ball back. I have to believe in my quarterback. I have to believe in my team. Now, I don't have a problem. A lot of people are saying they have a problem that he didn't go for it, though on fourth and one, and he just took the field goal to make it 17 to 7 Of course, take the field goal.
