Hey, hey, coming up on 3 o'clock. Fast first hour here today. Carton Show with Big Mac. Da-da-da-da-da. Don Mottingly back to Philadelphia.
Uh, Steve Cohen was at the Raze game last night. Did anybody see that?
Chris McMonigle (0:16)
Yeah, of course.
Craig Carton (0:17)
That's kind of a weird thing. I'm not sure if he was there to support Peralta.
SPEAKER_3 (0:20)
I can't imagine that being the case, but...
Craig Carton (0:22)
Like, I'm just saying, I'm like...
Chris McMonigle (0:23)
And Peralta was surprised to hear that he was there, so it wasn't like...
Craig Carton (0:25)
So he wasn't then.
Chris McMonigle (0:26)
Yeah.
Craig Carton (0:27)
Like, maybe he's trying to buy Tampa Bay? Is that possible?
Chris McMonigle (0:32)
You think he's there scouting out the Rays?
Craig Carton (0:35)
Or trying to get Kevin Cash to manage the Mets or something?
Chris McMonigle (0:39)
If he wanted an up close and personal view of a fan base that doesn't show up so he can be pissed at both fan bases.
Craig Carton (0:44)
Right, exactly. Met fans stop coming and Rays fans don't come.
SPEAKER_4 (0:48)
It's like Mets South here.
Craig Carton (0:50)
Because I don't know, like, he seems just that big a baseball fan that he was in Tampa?
Chris McMonigle (0:54)
I don't know.
Craig Carton (0:55)
Let's be honest.
Chris McMonigle (0:56)
Gotta be frustrating to watch Peralta pitch the way he pitched last night. Yes, lights out. After a season for the Mets where he couldn't figure it out.
Craig Carton (1:02)
Six strong innings. Shut out ball and he gave up a few hits.
Chris McMonigle (1:05)
Fast ball up in the zone. Like, he just...
Craig Carton (1:07)
But you know, though, that's an indictment on the coaching here. Because I remember when Peralta pitched against the Yanks last week, let's see Jeff Frankor talk about it. I think it was Jeff.
And he's like, as soon as Peralta got here, they immediately recognized a fix in his delivery.
No, no, not just what pitch. But I guess I couldn't explain it, obviously they can. Like they noticed something on film immediately that they changed, which I think, if I'm not mistaken, I don't know, it doesn't matter what it was. Anyway, and I'm saying to myself, that's great coaching, right? Why didn't the Mets have that? And then since we're talking Yankees here, why don't the Yankees have that?
Chris McMonigle (1:49)
Yeah, agreed. I mean, but they do, and so do the Mets. Like it just didn't work with Peralta.
Craig Carton (1:53)
Peralta's pitching like he's one of the best pitchers in the sport.
Chris McMonigle (1:56)
I get it. They also, a bunch of guys left to trade, too, and got worse after they left.
Craig Carton (2:00)
Which says a lot about, you know, the coaching staff there.
Chris McMonigle (2:04)
I get it, but I'm saying, like...
Craig Carton (2:05)
Oh, I thought you meant Tampa. I apologize.
Chris McMonigle (2:07)
No, no, no. The Mets.
They sent Weaver to Pittsburgh. He pitched much worse. They sent Rayne, right, who they sent, Rayleigh. They sent Rayleigh to Philadelphia. He didn't make the postseason roster. Like, I'm just saying it works both ways. I'm not saying you're wrong. It is about coaching. They were able to unlock and untap something and tap into something with Peralta. The Mets couldn't. But it does work both ways. The Mets were able to do that for Sean Isaiah. The Mets were able to do that for Luis Severino. The Mets were able to do that for a bunch of different guys. Same thing with the Yankees.
Sonny Gray didn't work with, but I can give you countless pictures. Where it did work.
Craig Carton (2:47)
That's fair. I think it's just more on display because they're in the ALCS.
If it's a random July game, I certainly aren't paying attention to it.
Chris McMonigle (2:57)
What's frustrating is he was the guy they brought in to be the top of the rotation guy, to be there with Nolan McClain and settle things and give you an ace every fifth day.
They brought him in, maybe going to look to extend him. They don't really go out and pay a lot of money for pitchers, so this is kind of their answer. He's one of the best pitchers in the National League last year. And along with everything else, it just didn't work. And so to see it go to Tampa Bay and have it work, it's frustrating. It is about coaching. I'm not saying you're wrong, you're 100% right. It's an indictment on the Mets coaching staff. But I'll just say, it happens, it happens good and bad. The Mets have done a really nice job with some pitchers. They just, for whatever reason, they couldn't unlock it with Peralta.
