Yeah, yeah!

Craig Carton (0:02)

A little Matchbox 20 on a Thursday, why not? 888-880-8119, Carton Show, Big Mac!

Chris McMonigle (0:09)

Love to win Matchbox 20, win Hardcore. Right, yeah, I agree, 100%.

Craig Carton (0:13)

100%, I agree, I agree. I'm kind of vested right now in this little, what amounts to like a lover's squirrel, quarrel, between Troy Aikman and Joe Buck.

Chris McMonigle (0:29)

Yeah.

Craig Carton (0:29)

Right? So for the first time in their relationship, Joe Buck got the wood first, right? Because when they first went over to ESPN, Troy Aikman got his contract signed first, and then Joe Buck got signed a couple weeks later.

Chris McMonigle (0:42)

Oh, that's right, I remember that, yes.

Craig Carton (0:43)

This time around, Joe Buck, by the way, is the more important of the two?

Chris McMonigle (0:48)

I do tend to agree.

Craig Carton (0:50)

He got a ridiculous deal, $108 million bucks first, and then according to our reports, as we talked about a little bit yesterday, they're having a little squabble. And then Troy Aikman somewhat cryptically said today, looking forward to being a free agent. Yeah. So is the Buck Aikman relationship, but maybe, which just shows you, I'm sorry to say this, but screw you, Troy Aikman.

You're making 20 plus million dollars a year being the NFL analyst and doing Monday Night Football, right? And by all accounts, he's very high maintenance and has fired producers left and right that don't kiss his ass. And now whatever the reason or rationale is that you're pissed off at your 25 year partner because he got the hundred million dollar deal and whatever the issue is, he didn't tell you, he didn't share it with you, he didn't wait for you to get your deal done, whoever it is, and you're going to be a little bitch about that?

Like, I shouldn't use that word, I apologize. But like to me, you've lived a charmed life. You get paid a boatload of money to be an NFL analyst, which means you have to work maybe 20, 21 weeks weekends out of the year. And you can't be happy for the guy that sat next to you for 25 years. And now you're going to be a little primadonna. Well, I just wait to be a free agent.

Chris McMonigle (2:18)

Well, I mean, that's I don't have any... You have a problem with that statement?

SPEAKER_3 (2:21)

I just wait to be a free agent.

Craig Carton (2:23)

They don't want to... They got in a fight, a verbal fight.

Chris McMonigle (2:25)

But it's more about how...

Craig Carton (2:26)

And there's tension. Why? Because I got paid?

Chris McMonigle (2:28)

ESPN doesn't seem to want to retain him as much as he would like.

Craig Carton (2:32)

ESPN recognizes that you're not worth $20 million a year.

Chris McMonigle (2:36)

That's fine.

Craig Carton (2:37)

And by the way, none of them are, to be fair.

Chris McMonigle (2:40)

I totally agree. But we don't know exactly what happened with their argument. And as far as for him to come out and say, look, I'm looking forward to being a free agent. Why is that?

Craig Carton (2:49)

They don't want it.

Chris McMonigle (2:50)

They're not negotiating with him. What is he supposed to say?

Craig Carton (2:52)

So why be mad at Joe Buck?

Chris McMonigle (2:53)

Be mad at ESPN? Well, that I agree with. But the statement of, I'm looking forward to be a free agent.

Craig Carton (2:58)

If your employer says, we no longer value you at that number. So we're going to let the contract expire. And by the way, and I look forward to testing the market. If CBS wants you, if Netflix wants you, if whomever wants you, we wish you the best of luck.

Chris McMonigle (3:11)

Yeah.

Craig Carton (3:11)

But we've given you a couple hundred million dollars over the years, right? Whether it's Fox 3, ESPN or a combination of the two, right? Yep. Like at some point, man.

Chris McMonigle (3:25)

Listen, I agree.

Craig Carton (3:26)

They got in a fight because Joe got paid. Joe's more important than you in that broadcast. And let me ask you another question.

Chris McMonigle (3:33)

Please do.

Craig Carton (3:35)

When's the last time you said, Oh, wait a minute, Aikman's not doing the game. I'm not watching it.

The answer is never.

Chris McMonigle (3:42)

Yeah, but I wouldn't say that about Joe Buck either.

Craig Carton (3:44)

The analyst's salary. Why don't begrudge it at all? Good for them is the most overpaid position in sports broadcasting history. And that's why there's a story that Tony Romo tells. I don't know if he tells it anymore because his issues.
