Yeah, yeah, football's back, Yankees on a win streak. Life is good, baby. Rams, Niners tonight. Now, admittedly, I was walking to my car, which was unfortunately three blocks away last night, so I did not hear live the pitch segment that you guys did, which will be at 6 o'clock or as close as we can get to 6 o'clock, on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays.

So just out of curiosity so I can start keeping track and there's no cheating.

Chris McMonigle (0:29)

I made sure they keep track.

Craig Carton (0:30)

Okay. What was the spread last night, three and a half, right?

Chris McMonigle (0:34)

Three and a half.

Craig Carton (0:34)

Which is interesting because the Patriots did cover the number. They did. But if you had Moneyline, obviously Seattle won.

Chris McMonigle (0:41)

Of course. And if they didn't go, was it offsides or was it a full start or a delay of game penalty when they were third and one at the four Seattle and ended up kicking that field goal instead of going in. That one pissed me off.

Craig Carton (0:53)

I'm sure it did.

Chris McMonigle (0:53)

So who did you have in that game? Seattle.

Craig Carton (0:56)

So you took Seattle, so that's a loss for you.

Chris McMonigle (0:58)

Correct.

Craig Carton (0:59)

Who do these two hammerheads have?

SPEAKER_6 (1:01)

Also Seattle.

Chris McMonigle (1:02)

Also Seattle.

Craig Carton (1:03)

Let me guess.

SPEAKER_6 (1:03)

And you could tell by how eager he was. A nice little win to start.

Chris McMonigle (1:08)

A good start to the year for Gallup.

Craig Carton (1:10)

With by the hook.

Chris McMonigle (1:12)

Yes.

Craig Carton (1:13)

By the way, when you do bet on sports, I do not encourage it at all. There is something like a wins a win. Obviously, you celebrate it when you're happy money in your bank account. But when you win by the hook, which is the parlance for the half point.

Chris McMonigle (1:28)

Yep.

Craig Carton (1:29)

There's a little extra special feeling about it.

Chris McMonigle (1:31)

Yes, no doubt. And you know what else I'll find funny? I don't know if you find this funny or ironic or not. I found it a little ironic. In that moment, if you bet the Patriots, you love the interception. And if you bet Seattle, you're pissed off at the interception.

Craig Carton (1:44)

Correct.

Chris McMonigle (1:44)

Like it's because the only way you win is if it goes to overtime and they score touchdown overtime.

Craig Carton (1:49)

Now.

Chris McMonigle (1:49)

So like it's it's it's all it was just I don't know. I thought the dynamic was funny because if you bet the Patriots, you figure you want to root for the Patriots.

SPEAKER_6 (1:56)

You love that they fumbled it.

Chris McMonigle (1:57)

You love that they blew it at the end of the day.

Craig Carton (1:59)

Now, here's the thing.

And I'm saying this again. I have to always say with the caveat.

Don't gamble. You're going to lose. All right. That being said, the majority of you will be able to gamble responsibly, recreationally. A small percentage of people have the issue I have. So I'm not a preacher. If you want to gamble, just obviously be smart about it, right? Don't don't wager your mortgage on a game that you have no control over. But if I am going to also be a bit of a tutor for guys that may be new to it, it is unconscionable at any level of gambling for you to ever lose by a hook, by half a point. What I mean by that is...

Chris McMonigle (2:36)

By the hook?

Craig Carton (2:37)

Yes. If you were betting real money, and you guys weren't, this is just a friendly thing inside, in-house.

If you were betting last night, and the spread was New England plus three and a half, Seattle minus three and a half.

If you wanted Seattle and you didn't buy the half point to make it three or the full point to make it two and a half, you should never gamble ever again.

Chris McMonigle (3:00)

You feel that strongly about that?

Craig Carton (3:02)

Yes.

It is a must. You have to do it. Because when you lose by that half a point, and it would have cost you another 10% on the VIG to buy the half point, 20% to buy the full point, and it rarely does come into play over the course of hundreds of wagers, or are you more than that? You're an idiot if you don't do that before the bet. So that's just a little, again, and I'm not encouraging you to bet, but if you are going to wager, you can at least learn from other people's experience and be smart about the wagers you make. Stop betting 17 parlays. You're not going to win.
