The Yankees won a game that if you were a betting man or woman, I don't think there's that many people out there that would have thought the Yankees would have won that game yesterday. You just couldn't have. They were facing Drew Rasmussen, who had not given them a run in 13 innings and two starts this year, who had an ERA under one for his career against the Yankees. And, oh yeah, the Yankees didn't have a starter because to the injury to Carlos Rodan and the ineffectiveness of Brendan Beck, and I guess they didn't want to call up Elmer Rodriguez again, they decided to go with a bullpen game. Now there's no way the way the Yankees have not been hitting, the way the Yankees have looked having gone 4 and 14 over the previous 18 games, now you think there's any way possible that the Yankees could win that game yesterday. And you know what? They did. Shocking every day. They won 12 to 4 So what they did, and I kind of said that this should be the thought process going into St. Pete, just try to split the four games. With everybody banged up, with the team in disarray, don't lose 3 out of 4, don't get swept. Well, Kam Schlitwer started them off in great, great fashion, and then they lost two games. And if they lose yesterday, they lose 3 out of 4, they lose two more games in the standings, and you'd be right on the precipice of having to give up on winning the American League East. I don't think that's hyperbole. I think you might almost have to think, you know, we got to lock in a wild card. Now, they're still behind. They're four games back in the standings, but they've got a lot of games left to play, and they've got to play better. They started three game series against the Nationals tonight. Now, the Nationals have terrible pitching, but the Nationals could hit with anybody. So, these might be high scoring affairs. Maybe the Yankee offense got on track yesterday and against subpar pitching that the Nationals have. Maybe they'll win games 10-8, 10-7. Maybe the Yankee pitching today, it's Ryan Weathers. Maybe they could shut down a really potent Nationals offense and then go into the all-star break, take a deep breath and reset. But you never know. You know, I said this during the game and I found out that right after the game, that was the first thing that Aaron Boone said. You know, I brought it up, I think, in the seventh inning when the Yankees were clearly running away with it. And I said to Joe Girardi, you know, facing Rasmussen, the way the Yankees aren't hitting, having a bullpen game. You never would think the Yankees are going to win this game. But as the late John Sterling would always say, well, that's baseball, Susan. And that's exactly what Aaron Boone said following the game. Now, is yesterday's game a cure all? No, of course not. I'm not going to sit here and lie. They've got issues offensively. Did they solve those issues? I mean, we finally saw Austin Wells hit his fifth home run and get his 11th run batted in.
