Somehow, someway, they only needed runs in one inning to take the first game of the series against the Seattle Mariners. So four-one Yankees, Red Sox lose also. Tampa keeps winning, and the Yankees lead over the Red Sox for the number one wild card spot is now a couple and a half games. So all good for the Yankees, but still, is this offense an offense that you can count on to win a seven game series? And it's all that. Interesting reaction to our show yesterday at a jet camp that I'm frankly surprised about.
We're based on our interview with Aaron Glenn yesterday.
A lot of jet fans and hosts on this radio station now view the jets differently. We'll get into that. And of course, why do all the news breakers and makers come to The Carton Show at Big Mac? Because that's the result of you opening up and showing some vulnerability to the audience on the most-listed two-talk show in the afternoon in New York City. Good afternoon, Big Mac. How are you today?
**Chris McMonigle** (1:05)
I'm doing well, Craig. Another ugly victory. Just keep giving them to me. Keep giving them to me with these ugly victories. I have no problem with them. Yeah, you do. Up until the seventh inning, then I have no problem with them.
**Craig Carton** (1:16)
I could tell last night, and I almost texted you, because there was another...
**Chris McMonigle** (1:21)
Another.
**Craig Carton** (1:22)
Oh, my don't. Here we go. Oh, they're down a run.
Here we go. And then out of the blue, out of the blue, bang, bang, bang, a run, another run, couple more runs.
**Chris McMonigle** (1:33)
How about four hits with runners in scoring position in one inning?
**Craig Carton** (1:37)
Which is not something they're very good at this year.
**SPEAKER_4** (1:40)
Not good at all, but you know what?
**Chris McMonigle** (1:42)
All that matters is they continue to pitch well. We're going to have to have a conversation about Weathers and how good he's looked, and whether or not Rodin coming back matters to this team in postseason play.
I mean, he is making an argument to be the fourth starter of this team. Now we got to see Rodin come back. They're paying him a lot of money. He's got a track record. Let's see what he is. But right now, he's making a case, Weathers, that he should be this fourth starter in a playoff series.
**Craig Carton** (2:07)
And we're trying to win a World Series.
**Chris McMonigle** (2:09)
That's what it's about.
**Craig Carton** (2:09)
So there's not about, oh, we owe it to Rodin. We don't. Weathers is pitching his ass off consecutive starts now where he is a money good.
**Chris McMonigle** (2:19)
He got lit up in one game and gave up multiple home runs. And he recognized that his four-seam fastball was getting hit out of the ballpark. He has completely reshaped himself. He's throwing nothing but sinkers and sliders. And he has had a really good month. It's more than just one or two starts. Yeah, the last two have been zero runs. But you go back a month and a half, he's been an excellent pitcher for this team. And it's just the line keeps on moving with great pitching. The offense does nothing. And again, we know what the offense is, Craig. It's not getting better than this, unless and when guys return, but they continue to win games. It's like we're ignoring the fact that they're winning. We're so hung up on they only scored runs in one inning and they can't score runs. They're beating everybody they play. And we're ignoring it because they can't score runs, which I admit they can't score runs. And it's a problem. But the offense is hopefully going to be a different looking offense come postseason time than it is now.
And they still find ways to win baseball games. They have been a winning team during the stretch of not being able to score runs. And now they've taken a cut. The Red Sox have lost four in a row coming back to earth. And suddenly what seemed like a guarantee that the Red Sox would pass the Yankees in a flash suddenly going the other way.
**Craig Carton** (3:33)
Yeah. And look, by default, the offense just has to get better because you're getting better offensive players back. Now, when do they come back? It's obviously still a bit of a question mark.
**SPEAKER_5** (3:44)
How do they play everybody?
**Craig Carton** (3:45)
You know, the order in which they come back, I think Brian Boone pretty much said that yesterday.
And then you can figure out, you know, kind of the dominoes of who gets to play against what pitcher kind of thing. But Bellinger coming back has to make the offense better.
