Now, we got two hours of sports talk radio coming your way right here on The Michael Kay Show. No Michael Kay. Lot to get into. Hope everyone is having a great day. Enjoyed the All-Star Home Run Derby last night. Tonight's the actual game. Carl Ravitch, who was on the call for the Derby, is going to be stopping by and joining us at 2.3 today. John Jastremski, host of D York, D York and of course you watch him on ESNY all the time. He's popping on with us about 30 minutes. We'll talk some baseball with him. He was at the Derby last night. Got a chance to also catch up with Juan Soto and all the other Yankee players who are in the all-star game at the all-star media availability. So we'll get into all that. I'll tell you what, I wasn't sure what to expect with the new format. You know, Jeff Passon yesterday said it was going to stink. That didn't stink. And hand up and give credit to Passon for owning his awful take immediately. Last night at social media. That was fun. Again, Netflix, I thought once they started actually showing you the proper graphics, they did a good job of just keeping it simple. You didn't have a million different things in your face. Sometimes the camera angles were a little too cut off. They didn't just show the action. But I think that got better as the night went on from what I saw. And you got drama. You know, the limited amount of swings and not having a timer allowed people to enjoy each home run. And it allowed people to sit back and kind of watch the drama build throughout the night, especially at the end when Jordan Walker had to go to what ended up being a hostile environment. And he had to home run his final six swings to win. He also had a walk off victory against Cabanero in the second round. So I think if you're someone who tuned in last night, if you're a baseball fan, I think you had an enjoyable experience. Is that fair to say? The format of thought worked. Eliminate the clock. Each player gets a certain number of swings every round that worked. You have less total home runs. We have more drama. And the players are less fatigued. So I think they're going to be more likely to want to do it.
And how about this for Jordan Walker? So most baseball fans, certainly casual baseball fans, probably didn't know who he was. So Jordan Walker has played a couple of years in the big leagues. His salary for this upcoming year is $800,000, $799, to be exact. Last night by winning the home run derby, he made a million bucks. He made more last night than he'll make the entire season playing for the Cardinals. Pretty good. Pretty, pretty, pretty good. So shout out to Jordan Walker. I enjoyed the finish. You tell me if you did, 800.919.3776. Here's something that I was thinking about watching the derby.
The new Yankee Stadium has not had an All-Star game yet. Why is that? The Yankees had the All-Star game at the old place in its final year back in 2008 That was the famous Josh Hamilton first round in that derby.
They had the All-Star game the next night. That was the extra inning game. I think it went 13 innings. I remember I was at Sleepaway Camp, Camp Canada.
And our head counselor, the great Ken Ricken, was nice enough to let me stay up till like 2 in the morning watching all 13 innings of that epic All-Star game. That's when, I mean, I was in love with baseball. That's when I was really getting into watching the Yankees and becoming a hardcore fan and watching every second of that All-Star game. I watch it every year.
But I was thinking, we have not had the All-Star game at Yankee Stadium since 2008, meaning the new ballpark in the Bronx has never had it. Citi Field, brand new stadium, they got an All-Star game back in 2013 But that's a long time ago already.
