It's The Carton Show with Big Mac on a gorgeous Friday afternoon in New York City. Phone number to join, as always, 888-808-109.
Voice is a little shaky today after my Big Verizon dinner last night. An American cut three Grand Marnies, and Coke, of course, a nice ribeye, and God knows what else I ate, but today is not about me or about the storm last night. It's about one of my favorite people who joins me for the entire show today, my buddy Damien Woody.
**Damien Woody** (0:38)
Oh, what's up, my man? D-Wing, what's happening? How are you, buddy? Brother, I am good, man. It's good to be back here with you and just chopping up on the air.
**Craig Carton** (0:46)
We've been trying to do this for a minute, haven't we? Yeah, yeah.
**Damien Woody** (0:48)
Longer than people have known.
**Craig Carton** (0:50)
So I'm just going to tell the story out of the gate, if I may.
**Damien Woody** (0:53)
Go right ahead.
**Craig Carton** (0:53)
All right, so Damien's out of his pen at the time. We'll get to that later if you want to or not. And I get the job at FS1. And they come to me, Charlie Dixon and the gang at FS1. We start talking about who do you want to work with? Who do you want your partner, your co-host to be? And you're on a very short list of guys, all right? So I go, Damien Woody. And they were big fans of yours, as you know as well. So we have a secret steak dinner in Manhattan, all right?
And Damien and I didn't know each other that well at that point. Our kids went to school together. We had seen each other. We knew each other a little bit by no means were we closer friends at that time.
And we're like, this is going to be a great meeting. Let's see how the meeting goes. It's me, it's Damien, two Fox executives at the dinner at the steak house in Manhattan. All right? And you're the first choice to be my partner at FS1, okay?
So I'm having a drink at the bar, my usual Grand Marnier. You guys all come in and you go, oh, it's a drinking dinner. I go, well, I'm just having a drink at the bar. I'll never forget this. Waiter comes over. I've got my Grand Marnier. You asked to wait for three fingers of Julio 42 Your fingers are bigger than mine.
**SPEAKER_3** (2:04)
That's half a glass.
**Craig Carton** (2:06)
All good. Then comes the ordering part for dinner. I will never forget this as long as I live. I realize it ain't my money.
I'm going to order the burger for dinner.
**SPEAKER_3** (2:18)
Yeah.
**Craig Carton** (2:18)
Damien goes, I'm taking a look at the menu here. I'll get the Wagyu Porter House.
**SPEAKER_3** (2:25)
Right?
**Craig Carton** (2:27)
And then the crazy thing was, you didn't finish it.
So I'm busting your chops. I go, do you would? Couldn't finish it? And you said a line that I was in blazing in my brain. And you said, Craig, there's nothing better than Wagyu and eggs in the morning. I'm taking that to go.
**Damien Woody** (2:46)
That's right.
**Craig Carton** (2:47)
And I looked at Charlie Dixon and I said, that's our guy.
**Damien Woody** (2:54)
We had a lot of drinks that night. Yes, we did.
Yes, we did. If people didn't know how wasted we were that night. Yes, we stumbled out. But it was a good time.
**Craig Carton** (3:03)
Yeah, and I wish it had worked out. Obviously, you were under contract at the time. We couldn't make that work. And now you're a free agent. People obviously know that after 15 years at ESPN, and I thought you were very classy and gracious when you spoke about it. But great to have you here. We don't have to talk about that if you don't want. But great to have you here. And I've been looking forward to this day for a long time.
**Damien Woody** (3:22)
I so have I, man. It's been great. And listen, the whole 15 years at ESPN, a lot of really good teammates and things, but life goes on, man. And so I'm looking forward to just being here, being in the moment right here with my guy, with my dog Craig.
**Craig Carton** (3:37)
And like Bart Scott said, it's your job now to prove them wrong.
And that's it, I'll start doing that now. So look, you're here. We'll get to the Yankees last night. Obviously the Yankees take care of business against Baltimore. It's four straight wins now. And are you a Yankee fan, a Met fan? Where's your fandom? Because you know...
