And a good afternoon, everybody. This is indeed The Michael Kay Show. We thank you for joining us on this Thursday. It's September 17th, 2026 Me and you for two. Those are the rules of engagement. It's the fastest moving two hours in sports talk radio, and it's fast moving because of you, my esteemed co-host. And you know what the membership number is to co-host. 1-800-919-3776. 1-800-919-3776. Yankees lost yesterday in 13 innings. They also had to pinch hit for Aaron Judge in the sixth inning after a lower body, right leg problem. That's about as specific as they'll get. We'll get into that in just a moment. But I want to start off with the Mets and Alonso, if you would indulge me. We spoke about this one last week, spoke on Tuesday. And I'm kind of stunned that there are people that don't think Mets fans were right in cheering for Pete Alonso. And sometimes I try to see, not sometimes, I always try to see both sides of the argument. I don't get this one. I don't quite get this one.
If Pete Alonso came in to City Field and the Mets were battling for the top of the National League East or battling for a playoff spot, I would guarantee you that they would give Pete Alonso a rousing ovation at the beginning of the first game after the tribute video, and then they would be rooting for the Mets to win.
I guarantee it, but this, for Mets fans, was an opportunity to make their voices heard, that they don't like the job that David Stearns has done. How is that so hard to believe? No, I've never seen anything like this. I can't believe the fans did. I can't believe the fans did that. Met fans are a great group of fans that support their team through good and bad. But why shouldn't they cheer everything that Pete Alonso does to show David Stearns that they don't like the job that he's done? How do people not understand that? I mean, Sean Manaya was, quote, bewildered, bewildered that the fans would cheer against their team in a big spot. Sean, big spot, not a big spot. The Mets are in last place in the National League East. It's not a big spot. If it was a big spot, then I would be bewildered. So if they cheer for Pete Alonso and the Mets is still in it, I would be shocked. They would be telling me, you know what?
I like Pete Alonso more than I like the Mets. And that's not what they're saying. They like Pete Alonso more than they like this season. They like Pete Alonso more than they like David Stearns. It doesn't mean they like them more than the team. The team is not going anywhere. Probably the most salient points made by anybody after this whole thing was by Juan Soto. Juan Soto gets it. Hey, they have an outlaw to cheer about. So they use their energy to cheer for Pete Alonso. He got it.
Andy Green got it. He said he'd never seen anything like it. He said, but he essentially said that he understood.
What did you expect the fans to do? So he hits the home run of Senga. They weren't going to go wild. It was like written by the gods, the baseball gods. Let's give Pete Alonso this moment.
How do you not understand that? And if you, and there are some Mets fans that don't understand it either. And they keep coming back with the tired old refrain. You know, if he really wanted to stay here, he'd stay here. And you know what? Stop. This is a business for these people too. So he's trying to get the most money. I guarantee you, if the Mets gave him the most money, he'd stay. Or if the Mets even came close to giving him the money that the Orioles gave him, he would have stayed. If the Mets had given him five years, he would have stayed. So how do you not get that?
