It's The Carton Show with Big Mac on a gorgeous Wednesday afternoon in New... Is it Wednesday?

Chris McMonigle (0:15)

It's a Thursday.

Craig Carton (0:16)

Thursday afternoon in New York City. The number to join, as always, 888-808-109.

Got a great show for you today. Belly's full. After a nice little visit by the folks that Pat LaFriede meet, including Pat LaFriede himself.

Chris McMonigle (0:33)

How about that?

Craig Carton (0:33)

Good to have them and Melly Mel and the entire crew stopping by today.

But today's about more football and more football. And I've told you guys this from Jump Street.

Chris McMonigle (0:45)

I was thinking about you guys.

Craig Carton (0:46)

I told you guys the Patriots are paper tigers. I told you they're not winning more than six games. I told you that Drake Maye was an average or maybe good quarterback. And last night, on the road, albeit, on the road against a backup quarterback named True Luck, because Sam Dornel pulled an Aaron Rodgers, Drake Maye decides in the fourth quarter to go interception, interception, interception, and the Patriots lose.

Chris McMonigle (1:17)

Yes!

Craig Carton (1:18)

Good times, everybody. Good afternoon, Big Mac, how are you?

Chris McMonigle (1:21)

I'm doing great. I was thinking about you last night watching that game because everything you said, one week in, one week in, we have to be fair to the Patriots because they lost last year week one to the Vegas Raiders.

Craig Carton (1:31)

That is correct, sir.

Chris McMonigle (1:33)

But one week in, you could not have been more right.

Craig Carton (1:37)

That's right.

Chris McMonigle (1:37)

That's a game that is, it's an embarrassing loss on every level. When Sam Dornel goes down and Drew Lock comes in, you can't lose that game.

You can't give up 13 consecutive, like you just cannot allow it. And then in the fourth quarter, the performance that Drake Maye put forth, each interception worse than the next. Like the first one, all right, he tries to give it up to Dobbs. Dobbs is a kind of go get it at its highest point, kind of wide receiver. But he throws it into double coverage, it gets picked off. Then he throws one across the middle with love watching it the entire time. It's an unacceptable pass. And then in the end, it's one of the more dumb things I have seen a quarterback do.

Craig Carton (2:18)

Because you're in field goal territory.

Chris McMonigle (2:20)

You're going to overtime. There is literally a list of a million things you can do in that spot. There's one you can't. You could do anything. You could run out of bounds. You can get sacked. You could throw the ball into the ground. Hell, let's be totally honest.

You could have a throw the ball away and get a 15 yard penalty.

You could literally do intentional grounding. You could literally intentional ground the ball and still have a chance to win the football game. The only thing you cannot do is throw the ball up in the air and allow it to be picked off in the end zone. It is an inexplicable performance from the quarterback. It's a horrendous decision. It's unacceptable. And quite honestly, if you can't beat Drew Lock with a lead, what kind of football team are you?

Craig Carton (3:05)

You're not. And by the way, if they lose to Pittsburgh guy in week two in their home opener, they're going to start the season off 0-4 because they have Jacksonville on the road, a very good football team, and Buffalo on the road after that. But I will say this. Pardon me for a second there.

Chris McMonigle (3:18)

I will say this. That's a steak sandwich coming up.

Craig Carton (3:20)

Yeah, a little bit. What it reminded me of, I want to get to see if you are on the same page.

Chris McMonigle (3:26)

Okay.

Craig Carton (3:27)

The Drake Maye, let's just go, forget about the other two interceptions. They are what they are. The first one, jump ball. All right, I could probably forgive it, even though you're going for a score. But the one over the middle is just egregious. Egregious. And then with a chance to at least go to overtime. And again, Drew Lockster, their quarterback in their offense, while they obviously scored the 13 points in the second half, after being down 7-0, et cetera, in the first half going into the locker room, you're not worried or you shouldn't be worried about Drew Lock beating you in overtime. But when he decided off his back foot to throw that ball, and like you said, when he could have done literally every and any other thing, other than I guess fumble and lose a fumble, on the table, and at least still had that opportunity for what would have been, I don't know, 45 to 55-yard field goal, whatever the ball stops, to go to overtime, it was deja vu for me though.
