Nate Tice (0:55)
Hey, my very first actual non-niche podcast appearance was on this show. We did a quarterback draft years and years ago.
Mina Kimes (1:04)
Years ago. Okay.
This year we did top 10 offenses. I haven't checked back in at how those are doing.
Nate Tice (1:10)
Oh, I want to kind of quasi-victory lap one.
Mina Kimes (1:13)
Okay, you take one and I'll take one. I had San Francisco real high.
Nate Tice (1:17)
There you go.
Mina Kimes (1:19)
So I will take the victory lap on that. Check the receipts, folks.
I was, yes, for all of my mistakes.
Nate Tice (1:26)
Yeah, we're not going to talk about the chargers, but the, you know, where we had those ranked. But I don't know.
I did see that those Dallas Cowboys were first in success rate the last time I checked. So I don't know. Depends on what stat nerd stat you're looking at.
Mina Kimes (1:39)
What about everything else with the Dallas Cowboys?
SPEAKER_1 (1:41)
We're not talking about that to you today.
Nate Tice (1:42)
It wasn't top ten defenses.
Mina Kimes (1:46)
Okay, so today we are previewing week six. As always, we will talk about all of the games. We will pick all of the games. I actually haven't picked them, so I'm going to be auto bling throughout in my family's Pick'em League. I have it open next to me. And we will also, some of the games we will talk about at more length than others. And one of those games is Thursday Night Football, a game that, before the season, I actually, so tonight, by the time you're listening to this, this has already happened. I'm interviewing my friend Peter King. He has a book out, which is fantastic, the game. It's all about the history of football. And he wanted to do on Thursday night, or his people, his publisher. He said, Peter, please, Seahawks, Broncos, absolute banger. You cannot do this during that game.
It's still a good game.
Nate Tice (2:30)
Yeah.
Mina Kimes (2:31)
For sure.
Nate Tice (2:32)
Best jersey game of the season.
Mina Kimes (2:34)
Oh my God, the throwbacks. Oh, buddy.
Nate Tice (2:38)
When the Seahawks were in the AFC West, which is, you know, this is a AFC West tilt.
Mina Kimes (2:42)
Vintage rivalry.
Nate Tice (2:44)
Yes.
Mina Kimes (2:44)
I have a Broncos Busters t-shirt from that era of football around here somewhere.
Nate Tice (2:49)
I have no idea how I procured it. Mom still has one of those and has a Raider hater, Broncos Buster, and I'm trying to remember, I think it was Chargers and Chiefs, but I think those were the main two back in the 80s.
Mina Kimes (3:01)
That would be a sweet thing to collect is just vintage rivalry t-shirts that don't exist would be an amazing. Anyways, all right, so these teams, I was thinking about this game actually, because unless I'm mistaken, I believe the Seahawks defense was Bo Nix's first start in the NFL, and it was very bad. He looked, it was upsetting. And then we realized the Seahawks defense was awesome, that the world realized, and Bo Nix got better. But unfortunately, we are now, it feels like a little bit of a full circle moment because we're coming off some pretty dismal performances from Bo Nix. Broncos fans are apoplectic. Let's start on that side of the ball, because I've got the other side, which is the Seahawks offense versus the, still very good Broncos defense. But you have the Broncos offense against the Seahawks defense, Nate.
What you got?
Nate Tice (3:51)
Yeah, you gave me a fun one.
No, this, there's, I think one of my favorite things to do, because we do our own preview shows on Football 301 I used to do them at the Athletic with Robert. And it's really fun for me. You know, some of my coach brain comes back in where I'm like, okay, I'm on the offensive side of ball. What would I attack? And sometimes I can go, I can lean a little too hard into that. And sometimes they're like, hey, isn't the defense supposed to be good? It's like, yes. But for me, it's when I watch the Seahawks defense, because they are, I still think one of the best units and they are really do really good stuff. Game planning every single week is what do you pick at with them? And I've noticed the last two weeks, even in that Chargers game, that there's some kind of two back runs, zone runs, especially, that you can kind of do some things against this defense where it's not great, it's not like, oh my goodness, like this is a huge hole to like, you got to pop this all the time. It's more that the Seahawks are just kind of more average, which compared to everything else that they do is that is excellent or good or very good. Average is pretty good. And that zone runs, two back runs. And something I noticed the Chargers did and then the 49ers got to a little bit is kind of play action towards the boundary. And why I'm bringing that up is because the Seahawks want to run so much cover six, they want to do so much of their things with their simulators and everything like that, you can get the corner kind of caught in the bind. That kind of corner that's in the cover two corner. And again, this is just me extrapolating, hey, what can Sean Payton do? Because with Bo Nicks struggling, and this is kind of, you know, this could be a much longer conversation, I know. But with Bo Nicks struggling, okay, what can you do to help him help out this offense? All right, well, we give him training wheels. There's already a lot of training wheels in this offense, a lot of movement throws, a lot of bubbles, a lot of screens. They try to run the ball. You change play callers.
