From the brains behind Brains On, it's Smash Boom Best.

Carina (1:20)

The show for people with big opinions.

Molly Bloom (1:23)

Hi, I'm Molly Blue and this is Smash Boom Best. The show where we take two things, smash them together, and ask you to decide which one is best. We've got a rock'em, sock'em showdown that asks, which is the coolest outdoor pastime? Is it the hobby that involves digging and dirt and cultivating beauty? Or the activity that involves getting your body moving through gorgeous scenery? That's right. It's gardening versus hiking. Here to show us the site and heights for team hiking is singer, actor and story pirate, Alex Nader.

Alex Nader (1:55)

I'm on an incline all the way to the top, Molly. Happy to be here.

Mahayla Laurence (1:58)

Hooray!

Molly Bloom (1:59)

And here to make our gardening love grow is performer, theater maker and story pirate, Mahayla Laurence.

Mahayla Laurence (2:06)

Hi, Molly. Hi, Carina. And Alex. Hello, everyone. I'm so excited to dig into some debate together.

Molly Bloom (2:14)

And here to decide today's winner is Carina from Los Angeles. Carina sings, plays violin, does Indian dance, and started a non-profit called Perform for Change. Hi, Carina. Hi.

So, Carina, tell us about Perform for Change.

Carina (2:29)

So, basically, it's an organization that I started where I do performances and presentations to raise money to help stop climate change.

Molly Bloom (2:38)

That is a really good cause. So, you do all sorts of performances. You sing, you play instruments, you dance. Do you have a favorite of all those? Is it hard to choose?

Carina (2:48)

I mean, I think, like, in terms of perform for change, my favorite one is probably my first one, which I did on the 3rd Street Promenade. I did like an Indian dance with my Bollywood group.

Molly Bloom (3:00)

Awesome. And that's like a big kind of market area in LA?

Carina (3:04)

Yes.

Molly Bloom (3:05)

Very cool. Speaking of Bollywood dance group, I heard you just did a big dance at your uncle's wedding.

Carina (3:10)

Yes.

Molly Bloom (3:11)

Please tell me about it.

Carina (3:12)

I sort of choreographed a dance with my cousins, and we performed it for my uncle who just got married a couple weeks ago.

Molly Bloom (3:20)

Were there any like particular moves that were tricky or like that you were proud of?

Carina (3:25)

I was wearing like a really heavy dress, so I was kind of proud that I was able to like do a lot of like jumping moves for like the bhangra aspect, which is a very energetic type of Indian dance. So yeah.

Molly Bloom (3:37)

Cool. What made the dress heavy?

Carina (3:39)

I think it had like a bunch of net and like layers underneath it. Yeah.

Molly Bloom (3:43)

Cool. Very cool. So you're strong too.

Carina (3:46)

Okay.

Molly Bloom (3:47)

Any advice for our debaters today?

Carina (3:49)

I think just make it funny and have a lot of facts and examples, and I'll really like that.

Molly Bloom (3:57)

Perfect. Will Karina choose gardening or hiking as the winner? We're going to find out soon, but first the rules of the game. Every debate consists of four rounds, the declaration of greatness, the micro round, the sneak attack, and the final six. After each round, our judge, Karina, will award points to the team that impresses her the most, but she'll keep her decisions top secret until the end of the debate. Listeners, we want you to judge too. Mark down your points as you listen. At the end of the show, head to our website, smashboom.org, and vote for whichever team you think won.
