What's wrong baby?

Amy Nicholson (1:05)

What's happening? What are you doing?

SPEAKER_5 (1:07)

What do you mean?

Amy Nicholson (1:08)

You were pulling on my head.

SPEAKER_5 (1:10)

What? No I wasn't. I just came in. You were screaming. What happened?

SPEAKER_2 (1:14)

I saw Charlie in the corner and then you started trying to pull my head off.

SPEAKER_5 (1:17)

Here, I would never do that to you. Are you crazy?

SPEAKER_7 (1:20)

Please.

The movie Hereditary.

Hello everyone and welcome to Unspooled. This is a podcast about good movies, critical hits, fan favorites, must-sees and in case you missed them, we have covered the AFI Top 100 and now we are checking off movies from three major lists. The Letterboxd Top 250 films with the most fans, the IMDb Top 250, and the New York Times 1000 essential films. And we'll also be chasing our own curiosity. Hello, I'm Amy Nicholson. I'm film critic for Los Angeles Times. I have memories of seeing Hereditary for the first time that I will get into. But I'm just kind of antsy to introduce our special guest today. We have David Ehrlich. He is the head film critic of IndieWire. He is the director of the best year-end video wrap-ups. I'm just going to compliment you that big.

He is the king of letterboxed and extra special for today's episode. He is the author of an upcoming book on A24 that I want to know about too much because I know what it's like to be like, how's your book coming? How's your book coming? How's your book coming? How is it, David?

David Ehrlich (2:29)

So poorly. I think that the only one of my many titles that have been bestowed upon me that is meaningful to me and that I feel like I've earned is Friend of Amy Nicholson. The most valuable of them all. Because certainly I've never thought of myself as a director.

I am so far away from being officially an author and finishing this book, which will hopefully be finished sometime in 2028, but we are a long ways off. And I can't remember what other distinctions you bestowed upon me, but I'm sure they're all unheard.

Amy Nicholson (3:03)

I called you King of Letterboxd, King Payman of Letterboxd?

David Ehrlich (3:06)

King Payman of Letterboxd. I mean, the trickster god of Letterboxd, one of Satan's eight generals or whatever, whatever the case might be, yeah.

Amy Nicholson (3:15)

Well, your monocle days will come soon enough. You'll be published author, David Ehrlich. And I remember the first time I read one of your reviews, and I was like, who the fuck is that? They're so good. Wow.

And then I've never agreed with you ever since.

David Ehrlich (3:27)

Kind of, you say. I mean, usually, I think my reviews are memorable to people for different reasons. But thank you. I actually, and maybe it's a manufactured memory, but whether true or not, I have a memory of seeing Hereditary for the first time. So I'll be curious to hear your Hereditary story to see if it lines up with what I remember.

Amy Nicholson (3:55)

Oh, okay. Well, let's jump into it because that's what I'm about to jump into. You ready?

SPEAKER_6 (3:58)

Yeah.

So I don't know if you're like me, but I love an app. And a lot of the times, I use that subscription or I use that app for about a month or two, and then I forget about it. And then I am paying for a subscription that I don't use. And I wanted help. I needed help. How can I get rid of these unwanted subscriptions? And that is where good old Rocket Money came in. Rocket Money has an app that allows you to track subscriptions and has the ability to cancel unwanted ones within the app in just a few taps, giving users an easy way to stop paying for things that they don't use. This app has been a complete lifesaver. And that's not all. They do a lot of other things. I mean, they can have you set budgets and financial goals and give you personalized insights on where you're actually spending your money and how to save your money. I mean, all that stuff is great, but right now the app cancellation part of it is saving me. Rocket Money is a personal finance app that helps you find and cancel unwanted subscriptions, monitors your spending and helps you lower bills so you can grow your savings. Let Rocket Money help you reach your financial goals faster. Join rocketmoney.com/unspooled. That's rocketmoney.com/unspooled.
