Love in Lyrics: Exploring Relationships Through Taylor Swift's Discography

May 28, 2026

We’re back with another episode of Love in Lyrics, and this week we’re exploring Taylor Swift’s “Clean” alongside Phoebe Bridgers’ “Motion Sickness.” Both songs capture the aftermath of heartbreak and relationship grief, but from very different emotional places.

Welcome back. We're excited to be back for our second episode of season two. And today we're going to be exploring two songs again. So we're going to be exploring Taylor Swift's Clean from 1989, along with Phoebe Bridgers' Motion Sickness.

Lauren Skuba (1:20)

Very excited to be talking about these two songs together and continuing to expand the artists that we're exploring alongside Taylor Swift here and our themes that we're going to be sort of grounding our reflections today within our. Grief integration, reflective versus reactive emotional processing. You're going to hear a lot of that. There's a lot of sort of different ways that each of these songs orient themselves around emotional processing.

Protective strategies, you've heard a lot about that from us. We're going to continue to be exploring those because those are so relevant to the way that we show up in relationships. And then emotional surrender versus emotional containment.

Paige Sutula (2:10)

All right, so as usual, we'll start out with our Taylor Swift song. So we're going to start by going through just a few lyrics that stuck out to us from each song and explore some of the themes that we picked up on. So from Taylor's song Clean, the first line we picked out was, You're still all over me like a wine-stained dress I can't wear anymore. And this has such, one, this whole song, beautiful imagery, no surprise from Taylor.

But this really, for me, brought up this idea of the residual nature of attachment experiences, relationships that we've been through. You can picture it very vividly, right? This idea of an experience and a relationship being integrated in different parts of us, being all over us. And I think there's a really interesting line of ending with a wine-stained dress I can't wear anymore. I think that is an interesting sort of nod, almost some foreshadowing to some acceptance that the relationship, as it was, is no longer viable or no longer the best option.

Lauren Skuba (3:26)

Yeah, I like that word residual. This lyric, when you think about somebody who's got a wine-stained dress, you might try to clean it, you might wash it, you might bring it to be dry cleaned, you might grieve because maybe you really loved this dress, and now it's got this big stain on it, and then this place where you might get to acceptance, maybe acceptance is, for some people, I can't get rid of this dress, but I'm going to keep it in the back of my closet, so it's still always there. Maybe it's, I'm going to cut this dress up and turn it into other things, the parts that aren't wine-stained. Maybe it's, I'm going to throw the dress away or recycle it. And all of that, those ways of thinking about an actual literal dress show up in the way that people experience that residual nature of attachment experiences. So what I like about how this lyric is holding that, and I can't wear it anymore, is thinking back on what was this experience like? How did it impact me? Maybe how did I impact the experience? And what about it feels like this stain?

What about it can't I wear anymore? And you mentioned this reflective piece, and I wanted to make sure to hold this, that sometimes in getting to work with people in relationships, when we're working with what's happening in this current relationship in the therapy room, people will reference, oh, like either earlier in my life, in younger relationships when I was younger with family, or in earlier, you know, intimate relationships or past intimate relationships, experiences bringing up something in the present, in the current relationship. And that's where I really like the residual piece.

And then if somebody is able to notice, oh, my gosh, I learned about this thing or I had this experience and I can see here now, I'm reacting to the fear or the pain of that. And is that something I'm still wearing? Do I need to still be wearing that?
