The movie begins with the Guardians on a mission to retrieve a powerful artifact from a distant planet. During their mission, they encounter a new enemy, a powerful alien race known as the Sovereign. The Sovereign are led by Aisha, who has created a new genetically engineered creature called Adam Warlock.
