Before they starred (or sometimes while they were starring) in their own radio detective shows, some actors made guest appearances on other mystery programs. Today we'll hear four of them in the supporting cast instead of the lead role.

Get this and get it straight. Crime is a sucker's road, and those who travel it wind up in the gut of the prison of the grave.

SPEAKER_3 (0:15)

Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent.

SPEAKER_4 (0:18)

The Adventures of Sam Spade, Detective.

SPEAKER_3 (0:21)

The Adventures of the Saints, starring Vincent Price. Bob Bailey in the Exciting Adventures of the Man with the Action-Packed Expense Account, America's Fabulous Freelance Insurance Investigator, Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar.

Hello, and welcome to Down These Mean Streets and more Old Time Radio Detectives and Crime Solvers. On today's show, we've got a line up of five radio detective stars, although none of them are appearing in their signature roles.

Today, we'll hear all of these actors in guest starring roles on other radio detective shows. First up is Jack Webb, who was about a year away from Dragnet when he made this guest appearance on Box 13

Webb co-stars with Alan Ladd in the syndicated episode The Better Man, where Alan Ladd's Dan Holliday is among the players in a high-stakes scavenger hunt. Next up is Charles Russell, who was right in the middle of his run as Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar when he made this visit to the Green Lama. Paul Freeze stars as Jethro Dumont, who uses the wisdom he learned in Tibet to fight crime in The Million Dollar Chopsticks. Up third, we have Gerald Mohr, who hopped over from CBS and the Adventures of Philip Marlowe to NBC to appear in this episode of Richard Diamond, Private Detective. Known as the Mike Burton Case, this one finds Dick Powell as Diamond, investigating a hit and run death that may have been more than an accident. And finally, we have two radio detective stars in guest roles in a Bob Bailey, Johnny Dollar mystery. We'll hear Larry Thor, aka Detective Danny Clover of Broadway is My Beat and Stacy Harris, Agent Taylor of This is Your FBI. They co-star with Mr. Bailey in The Big Scoop Matter. Our showcase of guest star gumshoes will begin right after these messages.

Miracle Whip has a flavor so pleasing.

SPEAKER_7 (3:02)

Miracle Whip tastes so lively, so teasing.

SPEAKER_6 (3:05)

Miracle Whip only one of its kind. Miracle Whip best salad dressing you will find.

SPEAKER_1 (3:10)

Miracle Whip is the only one of its kind because it's a different type of salad dressing made from a secret craft recipe.

SPEAKER_8 (3:18)

Miracle Whip combines the best qualities of old fashioned boiled dressing and fine mayonnaise, so it's truly distinctive and delicious, with a flavor millions of folks call just exactly right.

SPEAKER_1 (3:32)

Try it, won't you? One taste will tell you why it's America's favorite salad dressing.

SPEAKER_8 (3:38)

The one and only Miracle Whip.

And if you don't mind, I'd like to suggest something that you might share with your friends. And that something is a glass of sherry before dinner.

Naturally, a glass of Petrie California sherry. I say Petrie sherry because it's the perfect before dinner wine. You couldn't think of a better way to begin a meal.

That Petrie sherry has a beautiful inviting color like, like dark amber. And for flavor, well, you've heard sherry described many times as having a rich nut-like flavor. But if you want to learn for the first time with those words, rich and nut-like really mean, you just taste Petrie sherry. It's wonderful. Serve Petrie sherry by itself or serve it with hors d'oeuvres or those little cocktail sandwiches. And incidentally, if you prefer the sherry dry, you know, not sweet, just ask your wine merchant for Petrie pale dry sherry. Well, the important thing to remember is if you want sherry, you want Petrie sherry because that means good sherry.

You can because swan's exclusive super creamed blend gives you a wonderful new kind of beauty lather for your bath.

SPEAKER_8 (4:48)

Rich, creamy lather that cleanses gently, then rinses away so completely your skin is left fresh, smooth, lovely as ever.

SPEAKER_9 (4:56)

Yes, it's the perfect bath soap, super creamed swan soap.
