Google's New AI Notebook Update Is Live

Gemini Notebook can talk back to you now, and it can record you, and both of these landed in the last three weeks. So Google started rolling this out on September the 15th with a new look, new voice mode of recording, and a report format that builds itself whilst you read it. Now, some of it is already on your phone. Some of it is still landed. So let's go through exactly what shipped, what's still coming, and what you'd actually use it for. And let's start with the voice one, because that's pretty useful. So you can now have a live conversation with your notebook. On the phone app, Android and iPhone, in nearly 100 languages. So basically, you speak answers out loud, and you can cut in whilst it's talking. And every single thing it says is pulled from the sources you put in that notebook. So if the notebook only holds like three client contracts, for example, the voice only knows those three contracts. It's not going to drift in context.

Now, there are plenty of ways to talk to AI. There aren't many ways to talk to your own documents and get answers that you can check. Now, Google says this went to AI Ultra subscribers first in that week of the 15th with AI Pro and other tiers following. So picture the plain version of this. You've got a long service agreement sitting in your notebook. You're walking to the gym. You ask out loud what the cancellation terms are. It tells you, and you have to follow up without opening the thing. Second feature, and this one pairs with the first. There's now a recorder built into the Gemini Notebook mobile app as well. So Google said it started rolling out the week after the 15th. You can hit record. It captures, and that recording actually drops into your notebook as a source, sitting right next to your PDFs and your links. So the thing you actually said out loud becomes something you can ask questions about later. That could be, for example, a meeting. It could be an ID you talked for on a walk. It could be a client call. It could be something someone told you.

Whatever you want to use here. And because it's sourced, it will actually get cited like one as well. So you can ask the notebook a question, and it can point back to that spot in that recording where it heard the answer. So if you put those two things together, you get something that didn't exist in this tool four weeks ago. You can speak information in, speak questions at it without touching a keyboard either way. Now here's a simple way to hold this all in your head and think of it as a framework.

So call it the spoken research machine. There's three moves. So record it, ask it, and then hand it over. Record it is the new recorder, everything you want to get said out loud has somewhere to live. Ask it is the new voice mode, so you can get at that pile by talking, and every answer is tied to a source, you can check, then you can hand it over to the output side, taking what's in there and turning it into something you can send to another person. Now third mood is where most of the update sits. Now the September drop also brought in interactive learning overviews. Those actually live under report.

So normally the tool gives you a summary and then separate buttons for everything else. A quiz here, flashcards there, a mind map somewhere, right? But the interactive learning overview stitches them together with one running document with the summary, the quizzes, the flashcards and the mind maps all woven into it. Now Google said these are rolling out to all users over the following few weeks. So if you can't see it yet, that's probably why. The quiz tool has got a proper upgrade in the same drop. There are now three formats as well. So you've got multiple choice, short answer and fill in the blank. And after you finish one, you can actually chat with the notebook about how you did. It will tell you where you're weak and what you go back to. You can also edit the questions, add your own, take the ones that don't matter. And then there's also short video overviews, roughly six seconds each in more than 80 languages. And you can basically share them with other people, and they take something hard and put narration over simple animations.
