As we're in Psalm 37, let's pick it up in verse number 23, Psalm 37, verse number 23, as David is writing, he is giving us God's instructions for living life. And he says here in verse number 23 of Psalm 37, The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and he delighteth in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down, for the Lord upholdeth him with his hand. I have been young, and now I'm old, yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread. He is ever merciful, and lendeth, and his seed is blessed. Depart from evil, and do good, and dwell forevermore, for the Lord loveth judgment, and forsaketh not his servants. They are preserved forever, but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off. The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein forever. The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment. The law of his God is in his heart, none of his steps shall slide.
The wicked watcheth the righteous, and seeketh to slay him. The Lord will not leave him in his hand, nor condemn him when he is judged. Wait on the Lord, and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee to inherit the land. When the wicked are cut off, thou shalt see it. I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree. Yet he passed away, and lo, he was not. Yea, I sought him, but he could not be found. Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright, for the end of that man is peace. But the transgressors shall be destroyed together, and the end of the wicked shall be cut off. But the salvation of the righteous is of the Lord. He is their strength in the time of trouble. The Lord will help them and deliver them. He shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them because they trust in him. And so as David finishes this section, the second half of the Psalm, he's Hebrew poetry. He's going back and forth between the thoughts. This is how God is going to take care of the wicked. This is how God is going to take care of those who trust him. And so our title this morning, as I said, is God Delights in Ordering Your Steps. God Delights in Ordering Your Steps. Our requirement is to delight ourselves also in the Lord, and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. And when we do that, the Bible says God Delights in Ordering Our Steps. And so we're going to look into that and see what the Lord is saying. Let's pray and ask the Lord's help. Dear Heavenly Father, Lord, I do thank you for your blessings. I do thank you for your goodness in our lives. Lord, we do pray that you would bless. I do pray that you would, Lord, just speak through the preaching of your word. Help us to trust you more. Lord, I pray that you would just give me the ability to clearly and simply declare your word. In Jesus' name, I pray, amen.
David here is giving us the correct perspective of life. He's giving us the big view, right? He's giving us the view from experience, but he's giving us a biblical view. He's saying from, I am an older man now, I'm looking back on life, and it's easy to get caught up in the little events. It's easy to get caught up in the troubles of life, but let me zoom out for you. From the end of my life, let me under the inspiration of God, David was a man who walked with God, David was a man who saw God. Delivery is it? Let me tell you how God's servants should look at life, right? That's what Psalm 37 is about. He said, God is using David to give God's wisdom to give the servants of God a bigger picture of life. So we can see, it's been said this way, a lot of times life is like a traffic jam. We don't know exactly what's causing the jam. What we have to do is not hit the car in front of us. But every once in a while, God gives us the helicopter view of what's going on and lets us see, okay, wait a second, it's not the end of the world. I can make it through this. We'll get through this eventually. Let me see what's going on. It's not as far as I think it is. God can give us that perspective. Those who have had to go to work on the South Fork know about the traffic and all that's going on over the last week. I mean, it's been kind of crazy, but God wants to give us his perspective on life. And when you can see the whole picture, it helps us calm down a little bit. It helps us trust the one who's in control. So just a little bit of review because this is all connected. David instructs the servants of God to fret not, right? Fret not thyself because of evildoers. Be not thou, neither be thou envious at the workers of iniquity. It says stop being frustrated, stop being consumed. Don't get overwhelmed by the trouble you see in this life right now. There are wicked doers. There have been wicked doers and evil doers. There will be wicked doers and evil doers until Christ returns. That's the reality of life.
