God Breathed?

Data Over Dogma

May 15, 2023

Is all scripture written (or breathed) by God? This week we use big words like "univocal" to explore the implications of the Bible having only one author. Is every verse divinely inspired? And if not, what are the implications of a fallible text?

Hello everyone, Stakuya here.

Dan Beecher (0:02)

And I'm Gabby.

Do you want to hear tales about all of the different badasses of history and the lives that they had brought to life?

Well, if so, then look no further. History of Everything is just the right podcast for you. It's available on Spotify, Pandora, and anywhere else that you get your podcast from. Join us for some fun and just see how weird and wacky history can be.

Dan Beecher (0:41)

The concept of writing history wasn't exactly, there weren't rules laid out for people in ancient Asia for how to do it appropriately and correctly.

Dan McClellan (0:53)

Yeah, you weren't going to get an email if you said something from some authority who's going to come down on you, and your badge isn't going to work the next day when you try to badge in at the front door.

Dan Beecher (1:13)

I'm Dan Beecher.

Dan McClellan (1:14)

And I'm Dan McClellan, and we are here to try to help increase access to the academic study of the Bible and religion for the general public, and also to combat the spread of misinformation about the Bible and religion.

Dan Beecher (1:27)

Right.

Today, we're going to be doing a couple of things. You, Dan, are going to be talking about the fact that only one person wrote the Bible.

Dan McClellan (1:39)

Yes, there's the one source of the Bible. I'm going to be talking about, in my segment, what does that mean? I'm going to be talking about the word that you will hear almost every day, if not every day, across my social media channels, where I use this word frequently and frequently have to define it. But I wanted to talk about this for a little bit, just to clarify what that word means and why I think it's important to the way we talk about the Bible.

And then you're going to be talking about it.

Dan Beecher (2:09)

And the word, sorry, you didn't actually say the word.

Dan McClellan (2:12)

I didn't say the word yet, no.

Dan Beecher (2:13)

Okay, we're going to get to the word. All right, and the word was with them, and the word is God.

Dan McClellan (2:18)

No, not that word. The bird is the word, as-

Dan Beecher (2:21)

The bird is the word.

Dan McClellan (2:22)

As the great poet once said, yeah.

I got tagged 50 times in, no, I still get tagged. It's got to be over 100 times so far that I've been tagged in some video where somebody was trying to show if this is that and this is that and this is that, then that means the bird is the word. And people are like, facts, Dan?

Dan Beecher (2:44)

Dude, you don't need to fact check a joke. You can just be okay with it. You can just let the joke stay in. That's pretty, that's a lesson we can all learn. And I think that's useful.

Dan McClellan (2:55)

Yeah, I usually don't respond when people tag me in jokes, but that one I'm still getting tagged in. And then we've got another segment that you're going to be talking about. What an interesting verse from the New Testament.

Dan Beecher (3:08)

Yeah, we have a segment called Chapter and Verse.

This time, we're basically mostly just going to be focusing on a verse and see if we can tease out what exactly is happening in that verse. It's a pretty popular verse. It's a pretty influential verse. People make a lot of decisions based on that verse, and we're going to talk about it.

Dan McClellan (3:32)

Yeah.

Dan Beecher (3:33)

But why don't you launch in first?

Dan McClellan (3:37)

For my segment, what does that mean? We're going to be talking about univocality. And this is a word that I'm quite fond of using. I don't remember where I heard it first, but I have seen it being used by a number of scholars, in addition to a couple other variations on this theme. But univocality from the Latin means one voice. And the idea is basically that the Bible, all the different passages in the Bible, they all share the same perspective. In other words, the Bible speaks with one single and unified voice. One passage cannot disagree with another. And this is something that developed long ago as early Jewish readers of the Jewish scriptures and early Christian readers of the Christian and the Jewish scriptures were wrestling with how to make sense of the different passages that seem to be saying a lot of different things. And there are readers within the rabbinic tradition, there are readers within the early Christian tradition that developed a number of different ways to tease out lots of different insights from the text.
