Getting Better is a Skill

Mark Bell's Power Project

October 5, 2026

Working harder isn’t always the answer. Sometimes the biggest breakthrough comes from improving your skill, technique, awareness, and ability to stay composed.

You learn a lot through competing, even through, especially actually, especially through your losses.

Mark Bell (0:05)

I have got to be humbled every time and be reminded of like, hey, you're still new. Yes, I've been working on it for a while, but in the grand scheme of things, like you're still newish to this. For most people, when they try to run the fastest, they run slower.

Nsima Inyang (0:17)

Go towards the things that you're interested in and give yourself the time to get better at it. Meditation, especially in today's context of how we live, can actually be one of the most useful practices to control one's attention.

Mark Bell (0:32)

Alright, we have to address the poop story. Yeah, we have to address the poop story.

First of all, something I said right when this story broke, my wife was reading this to me and telling me about this because I didn't really know about it. And right off the bat, I just said, well, I don't think the athlete is really to blame. That's something I was thinking in my head. And then I said, well, there probably is currently a rule against spitting because somebody probably spit and did like snot rockets all over the course before. And somebody said, that's gross, let's get rid of that. And they did. And my wife actually looked it up as we were having this conversation. She's like, oh my God, you're right. They have a rule for that. I was like, and they don't have a rule for shit in your pants.

And so this girl was like, screw it. I'm going to keep going through with this competition. I believe she won.

Nsima Inyang (1:28)

She won.

Mark Bell (1:29)

Right.

Nsima Inyang (1:30)

Yo, that I think Ryan was just saying, like, that's impressive if we think about it. Like you, you, you literally deaf kid all over yourself. You got up running all over and you still managed to win.

Mark Bell (1:42)

Now you've shit yourself a couple of times. I remember you telling us on the podcast that you you pooped your pants in the in the in the sauna.

Nsima Inyang (1:49)

Yeah, but I left the sauna when that happened. Actually, I didn't leave immediately, but I left a little bit after.

Mark Bell (1:55)

Biohazard, everyone, everyone holds you down. They spray you down.

Nsima Inyang (1:58)

Hey, but I mean, I did tell you, like, you know, I think one of the weird things about this, it's, I think it kind of also does show her mindset because, I mean, I was at Jiu Jitsu the other day training. I had a little bit of the bubble guts in the morning.

We were doing some specific training where they start on the side control, right? And my training partner was about to get me in an arm bar. I escaped by pushing a little bit and I little, you know, a little bit, right?

Mark Bell (2:25)

Something came out.

Nsima Inyang (2:26)

Still finished, tapped him, went to the bathroom right after. That happens. But there's also the, there's the idea of like, are you going to stick around and keep fighting? You know what I mean? Like that's, would you, if you were in a situation and you know you could win, but you had shit running down your leg, would you keep, would you go, would you stop, would you leave, what would you do?

Mark Bell (2:45)

Luckily, I have deep cheeks, so hopefully it wouldn't escape out the way that hers did, but you know, diarrhea is like a totally different situation.

Nsima Inyang (2:53)

Yeah.

Mark Bell (2:54)

I would, that's why this is interesting, because this is like open to interpretation. Like if you, if you were doing wall balls and you're getting, I don't even know the order of competition, like what exercises are where, but I'm just thinking like a wall ball's greatest opportunity for something to squirt out of there, probably.

Nsima Inyang (3:12)

Yeah.

Mark Bell (3:12)

You're doing some wall balls and a little nugget shoots out. And if you have, you know, if your pants are like form fitting, it's like you figure between having some deep cheeks and having a little nugget shoot out and some tight pants that like, it's not going anywhere, you should be okay.

Nsima Inyang (3:30)

Yeah. Yeah.

Mark Bell (3:31)

Like I would, I'd probably keep, I'd probably keep going. But if I was like wrestling somebody, I'd have to like, I'd have to tell them, hey, I think I shit myself. But if I was in a competition wrestling somebody, there's money on the line too.
