Romesh Ranganathan (0:00)

Hello, and welcome to the Thursday edition of the Romesh Ranganathan Show. That was supposed to be like a sauna, you know, one of the Norwegian sort of sauna. What, from Frozen?

Ben (0:16)

Hello, hello.

Romesh Ranganathan (0:18)

Yeah, but it was Mrs. Duff. Hello, dear, and welcome to the Thursday edition of the Romesh Ranganathan Show.

SPEAKER_3 (0:24)

That's fantastic.

Romesh Ranganathan (0:25)

Every Thursday, we talk about Monday's episode, where occasionally we do, but mainly, we answer your questions and dilemmas. As always, I'm joined by the Goat and my mother, Shanthi Ranganathan, and the team of Billy Goats, the horrible little freaky creatures that populate the studio. Mum, how are you?

Shanthi Ranganathan (0:51)

I'm fine, thank you, sir.

Romesh Ranganathan (0:52)

How's life treating you?

Shanthi Ranganathan (0:54)

Life is treating me, I can't complain. I'm in a happy mood.

Romesh Ranganathan (0:58)

Are you? What's the best thing that happened to you in the last week?

Shanthi Ranganathan (1:01)

Yesterday, I spent the day with you. That was wonderful.

Romesh Ranganathan (1:06)

We spent the days together. My God. We went to Hever Castle.

Shanthi Ranganathan (1:10)

We went to Hever Castle. So Henry VIII.

Romesh Ranganathan (1:13)

Henry VIII turned up with Anne Boleyn.

Shanthi Ranganathan (1:16)

Yeah.

SPEAKER_3 (1:17)

There's some jousting, wasn't there?

Shanthi Ranganathan (1:19)

Yeah. Hello to me as well.

Romesh Ranganathan (1:21)

We said hello to everybody.

Shanthi Ranganathan (1:26)

I can't say. He said hello to everybody.

Romesh Ranganathan (1:28)

He was saying hello to everybody. The way you said it was like Henry VIII recognized you in particular.

Shanthi Ranganathan (1:33)

No, no, no, no. No, no. He didn't recognize me as Romesh's mother.

SPEAKER_3 (1:38)

No.

Shanthi Ranganathan (1:38)

He just said hello.

SPEAKER_3 (1:40)

Yeah. That's it. Right.

Shanthi Ranganathan (1:41)

Yeah. I'm not special. Okay.

SPEAKER_3 (1:44)

I want to make it clear.

Romesh Ranganathan (1:45)

Yeah.

Shanthi Ranganathan (1:46)

Yeah.

Romesh Ranganathan (1:47)

Okay, daddy? Yeah. Okay.

Ben (1:49)

So Henry VIII was doing like a meet and greet?

Romesh Ranganathan (1:52)

Yeah.

Well, he came out to the front of Hever Castle with Anne Boleyn. And he said, hello, how are you? And all this sort of stuff. And then he said, thank you for joining me on this special day. And then he walked through and he was kind of doing banter as he walked through the grounds. Yeah. And then we went over and he hosted the jousting tournament.

Shanthi Ranganathan (2:14)

Jousting? Yeah.

Romesh Ranganathan (2:16)

Jousting, yeah.

SPEAKER_5 (2:17)

What sort of banter does Henry VIII do on his way through?

Romesh Ranganathan (2:21)

Pardon?

SPEAKER_3 (2:21)

What sort of banter does he do?

Romesh Ranganathan (2:22)

He was doing jokes. Sort of, yeah, and people were asking for selfies.

SPEAKER_5 (2:28)

Yeah.

Romesh Ranganathan (2:28)

There's quite a few selfies on the way round, aren't there? Oh, yeah. Yeah.

Shanthi Ranganathan (2:31)

And you did as well.

Romesh Ranganathan (2:33)

What do you mean?

Shanthi Ranganathan (2:33)

They were coming and taking photos.

Romesh Ranganathan (2:34)

Oh, a couple of people asked for selfies with me, but I don't think they thought we were of the same period.

Shanthi Ranganathan (2:40)

Oh, you said, oh yes, of course. And you looked happy, though.

Romesh Ranganathan (2:46)

Well, I was in the photo. I was taking a photo.

Shanthi Ranganathan (2:48)

That's what I meant.

Romesh Ranganathan (2:49)

Some guy came up to me and said, Romesh, I know you're with your family. Is it possible for you to do a photo? And I said, yeah. And then he gave me the phone and he posed and he said, take it whenever you want.

Like a little bit of banter. And then I said, I reckon that's the thousandth time I've heard that. That's unkind. Well, I said it as a joke. Like he's come over. I'm with the Lisa and the kids and everybody. And he's come over to do his little bit.

Ben (3:14)

Yeah.

Romesh Ranganathan (3:15)

And then I just, I said it in a light way, but he looked gutted.

Ben (3:18)

Yeah, I would be.

Romesh Ranganathan (3:19)

He looked absolutely. So what should I have done?

Ben (3:20)

I thought that was funny. That sounded quite funny.

Romesh Ranganathan (3:23)

Ben, it's so many times that's happened. Am I supposed to react like, am I supposed to react like it's the first time I'm hearing it every time?

Ben (3:31)

You could just be like, yeah, like that.

Romesh Ranganathan (3:34)

legends got me bloody hell.

SPEAKER_5 (3:40)

Oh, why I order?

Romesh Ranganathan (3:42)

I thought I was a bloody comedian.

Shanthi Ranganathan (3:46)

He was chatting to you.
