It's The Carton Show with Big Mac on a gorgeous Friday afternoon in New York City. Phone number to join, as always, 888-808-119.

We have a great show for you today. Of course, New York Giants, Sunday afternoon, one o'clock at home against Arizona Cardinals. We got the New York Jets, Patrick Biltons getting bad news before their one o'clock game. Sunday afternoon, as well, we got the Yankees down in Tampa. And we've got some crazy stories to share with you from the world of sports. Good afternoon, Big Matt Carrey, you today, so...

Chris McMonigle (0:37)

I'm doing great, Craig.

Craig Carton (0:38)

Bad news for the New York Jets. Brice Hall out for Sunday's game. And Adonai Mitchell out for Sunday's game. So a season that started off with actually pretty good amount of promise. Obviously, beating the Titans should have beaten the Packers. And then I fought back valiantly against the Detroit Lions. Now you're having an opportunity against another NFC opponent, but you're going to have to do it with Braylon Allen as your star running back, Nobri's Hall.

Chris McMonigle (1:05)

Yeah, I mean, it's a tough blow to a team that honestly feels like, and I know we don't want to get too hyperbolic about early in the season, but, you know, you lose this game, you're 1-3. Yeah. That's just a fact of the matter.

Craig Carton (1:16)

And then, sadly, that brings with it a different conversation.

Chris McMonigle (1:19)

No doubt.

Craig Carton (1:19)

Because then you're a couple of losses away from thinking about the draft.

Chris McMonigle (1:23)

Unfortunately, I don't think the Jets would be there, but then you start thinking about this whole regime, you start thinking about this coach, you start thinking about the draft, you start thinking about the quarterback, you start thinking about a lot of different things. If they can't win, now, just not having Brice Hall doesn't mean they can't win. We still don't know who the Bears quarterback is going to be. Their defense isn't exactly great. This is a game that, honestly, they need to figure out a way to score a lot of points again. Like, this offense is going to have to figure out a way, even without Brice Hall, to go down the field against the Bears team that is susceptible to it.

Craig Carton (1:51)

That being said, I don't think Case Keenum has the command performance, like we saw him do last weekend. He was brilliant, and it looked like the offense didn't miss a beat. My gut is, there's going to be a lesser quarterback play in week two, but look, they're still a good football team.

Chris McMonigle (2:09)

And he got a chance to see it. And this coach who's an ex, you know, and that's part of it too, right? He obviously knows Ben Johnson very well. They were both coordinators in Detroit, so he should know and have an idea of his thought process on how to go about game planning him. So like this is a big game for the coach. This is a big game for Glenn and his defense being able to stop what will be a backup quarterback one way or another.

And an offense that has a great head coach and a great offensive mind, but like was also held to three points by the Minnesota Vikings. Like find a way to shut this team down and get a win that ultimately It's a great point.

Craig Carton (2:43)

They're a beatable team.

Chris McMonigle (2:44)

They're a beatable, the base aren't that good.

Craig Carton (2:46)

No, and they have a third string quarterback.

Chris McMonigle (2:48)

They're coming off a great performance where a backup quarterback found a way to have a really impressive game and a really impressive night. And they beat a good football team, but like they're not that good. And I'll be totally honest with you, like this is the game, the Jets have to win this game.

I don't know how else to say it. Like one in three is a spot in the NFL that's very difficult to recover from. And I know the expectations.

SPEAKER_3 (3:11)

If the expectations are play offs, yes.

Chris McMonigle (3:13)

If the expectations are play offs, right? I mean, and we could say whatever we want going into the season, ultimately, that's the goal, is it not, for every team in the NFL? Like, are they going to have a season worth being considered a contender in the AFC?

Like, in a division where, yeah, the Bills look like one of, if not the best team in football, but you've seen what the Patriots become. You know what Miami is.
