Yo, what's cracking, everybody? James Koh, Matt Harmon here with you. You're listening to Reception Perception, The Show.
All right, Matt, we got, again, we're kind of hurdling towards week number two, but still a lot to recover from in regards to week number one. Want to react to that Monday Night Football game between Kansas City and Denver, but also we're going to be pushing and letting people know about the the Charging Notebook that's up on the site here as well from our guy, Matt Harmon.
Matt Harmon (0:45)
Yeah, that's right. Charging Notebook in season is back. We'll have the tracker up sometime sometime this week as well.
You know, I take requests from the folks in Discord. So if you're not in the Discord, it is a subscriber only channel. That you can request, but it's a good place to be to kind of let me know who you want to see and why. Can't get to everybody every single week, obviously. However, get to a decent chunk, especially early on in the season.
And right now, there's four players up as we are speaking in human time right now. Matthew Golden, Antonio Williams, Marvin Harrison Jr, Luther Burden. By the time you guys are listening to this pod, I guarantee you there will be more names in there as well. So it's definitely fun to do this in kind of an efficient way to just comb through the teams on film, in addition to like actually watching the games just in isolation, then then digging in on some of these players in specific situations. I think you learn a lot. I think it's helpful for the people out there.
James Koh (1:41)
There will also be weekly quarterback updates here as well. So look for that from our guy, Alfredo Brown, who's going to be charting quarterbacks all throughout the season as well. Again, I want to. Yeah, I know it's going to be good, man. I also want to. So I want to start here with Kansas City.
You look at the passing chart for Patrick Mahomes, and I mean, it's the same stuff that we've been seeing for the past couple of years, right? Like a bunch of short and underneath stuff. You missed on some guys over the top. Yes, there was a big catch and run from Travis Kelsey on a broken defensive play there. But I think for the most part, man, this is again, not very encouraging if you're thinking about the long term season outlook here for Kansas City's passing game. I don't know, what were your thoughts watching Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid and company on Monday night?
Matt Harmon (2:31)
Yeah. Well, since I am a complete sick pup, I spent a good chunk of my time yesterday when I wasn't watching film or charting wide receivers, creating a massive coaching and tendency spreadsheet for myself to update every single week of the NFL season, to track some of the things I like in terms of schematics and what coaches are doing. The Chiefs, to start off positively here, they were the second most in terms of shifts from last year to this year, but on a positive end in a lot of those ways, depending on what you want to think from a schematic standpoint. They're under center rate, shot up. Obviously, their explosive run rate shot up. Their gap scheme usage shot up. Pass rate over expectation went down.
They were one of these teams that were very spread and shred last year. They were much more condensed. Motion went from 27th to 14th most. Play action went to 26th to 17th. So obviously, on one angle, James, Kenneth Walker being the guy that he is, he was the transformative figure that was promised by this team and we guessed at that. We've talked about that a lot in the off season that he was going to come in here and be a fundamental change force. And also, by the way, shout out to Eric Biennemy, a guy that when he was the play caller in Washington, I was kind of hard on Eric Biennemy. I did not like that offense. This offense that we saw for Kansas City last night did not look like that Eric Biennemy offense, especially in the run game. Frankly, I think, and this is what good coaches do, they get out of their bubble. They learn things, and I think that's what Eric Biennemy did. Like with Chicago last year, there was a lot of, again, heavy personnel under center play action. That is very Ben Johnson coded, not very Andy Reid coded. So again, just to start off positive here, I think that really was a big W for the Kansas City Chiefs that like Kenneth Walker, as long as he can stay healthy, is going to be everything that they imagined him to be. Now, to talk about the negativity, which is what you let off with.
